Silver Ray
Fodor’s Expert Review
Ship Overview
Car...nsatlantic
For...obal ports
The second vessel in any new ship class is generally expected to be a carbon copy of its older sibling. That’s pretty much the case with Silver Ray—and it’s actually a good thing. Having made her debut in June 2024, just 10 months after Silver Nova launched in August 2023 as the first ship in Silversea Cruises’ Nova class, Silver Ray offers the same light-filled and airy ambience, with a space-to-guest ratio that’s among the best in the cruise industry. For guests who crave luxury, relaxation, and calming sea views, this ship’s design satisfies on all three levels.Read More
For one, 728-guest Silver Ray features 43,000 square feet of glass windows and 42,000 square feet of outdoor deck space filled with quiet niches and comfy loungers and sofas. The ship also features a uniquely positioned pool deck and six exterior glass elevators, each offering sweeping ocean views. Combined, these design elements create an undeniable connection to the sea—although Silver Ray’s sleek all-glass elevators could prove problematic for any guest with a major fear of heights.
Silver Ray’s interiors are equally elevated. Décor, in a sophisticated tone-on-tone palette of mostly taupe, beige, and ivory with light and dark wood accents, also incorporates pops of brighter hues in furniture fabrics and contemporary artwork.
Like Silver Nova, Silver Ray’s design enhances the cruise line’s emphasis on culinary immersion. Onboard spaces dedicated to Silversea’s S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) culinary program include S.A.L.T. Kitchen, with menus that change nightly to reflect the flavors and ingredients of the port visited that day, as well as S.A.L.T. Lab, a hands-on kitchen space for cooking lessons and tasting dinners, and S.A.L.T. Bar, an inviting lounge where innovative bespoke cocktails are served by congenial mixologists.
A few other Nova-class public spaces make Silver Ray ideal for cruising the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South America, and other warm-weather locales. The Marquee, an inviting and photogenic trellis-topped dining venue on deck 10, is popular for both lunch and dinner, when it becomes The Grill, featuring “hot rocks” cook-it-at-your-table meat and fish dishes. The aft Dusk Bar is ideal for pre-dinner cocktails accompanied by live music and sunset views, while the open-air patio off of the aft Panorama Bar features sofas that are perfect for relaxing with a cocktail or cooling off after time on the dance floor.
Of course, a key element of luxury cruising is service, which on Silversea includes butler-tended suites and attentive bartenders and waiters who will be at the ready to pour your favorite drink. Silver Ray guests do tend to be mature travelers, especially on longer sailings, which attract a core clientele of affluent retired Baby Boomers, while seven-night itineraries are drawing an increasing number of fifty-something Gen Xers as well.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
What to expect on board
Staterooms & Cabins
Silver Ray has 364 guest suites in 13 categories. All are spacious and feature a private balcony, butler service, a walk-in closet, a minibar stocked with a guest’s preferred beverages and an array of amenities depending on the category. Décor reflects the ship’s overall design, with a focus on textured fabrics in neutral hues and roomy marble-clad bathrooms.
Most of Silver Ray’s accommodations fall into four veranda suite categories, all of which offer 357 square feet of living space (including a 56 square-foot balcony). The only difference is location (forward, aft or midship). There are 64 classic veranda suites, 87 superior veranda suites, 93 deluxe veranda suites and 42 premium veranda suites. All offer identical amenities and can be booked with a connecting veranda suite to create a two-bedroom configuration. A sofa bed can also accommodate a third guest. Worth noting: Some veranda suites feature just a walk-in shower while others have both a shower and bathtub. Guests can choose their preference when booking (look for the indicator on the deck plan) or make their preference known to their travel advisor.
The next suite levels on Silver Ray are two categories of medallion suites. There are 38 medallion suites, which are 527-square-foot one-bedroom suites, including an 86-square-foot balcony, located on decks 6, 7, 8, and 9. There are also six premium medallion suites, which are the same size but are located at the ship’s aft.
Silver Ray also features 14 silver suites, available as a 678-square-foot one-bedroom or a 1,033-square-foot two-bedroom (including the balcony). These are located on decks 6, 7, and 8 and feature a spacious dining area, a bathroom with a walk-in shower and whirlpool tub, and an enclosed bedroom with pocket doors.
There are also four junior grand suites, which like the larger grand suites, are located at the front of the ship (on decks 6 and 7) and are 521 to 684 square feet, with a 64 square-foot balcony off the living area, a bedroom with a spacious windowed bathroom and a separate powder room. These can accommodate a third guest on a sofa bed or be booked as a two-bedroom measuring 936 to 980 square feet.
Two other Silver Ray suite options, first offered on Silver Nova, are 16 signature suites and six master suites, all located on decks 6, 7, 8, and 9. Signature suites are 700 square feet, including a 172-square-foot balcony, and feature a separate bedroom and adjoining bath with a walk-in shower and whirlpool tub. Master suites measure 721 to 826 square feet, including a 230-square-foot balcony, and, like the top-tier otium suites, offer 270-degree aft-corner views from the living and sleeping areas and a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and whirlpool tub. All of these suites can accommodate a third guest on a sofa bed or become a two-bedroom when connected to a neighboring premium veranda suite or classic veranda suite.
Guests seeking even more space can opt for a grand suite. There are two of them, located at the front of the ship on deck 7. They can be booked as either a one-bedroom (915 square feet, including the balcony) or a two-bedroom (1,272 square feet), and they feature both a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and whirlpool tub as well as a separate powder room. A sofa bed can also accommodate a third guest.
The next largest option is one of the two Owner’s Suites. They’re located on deck 8 as a 1,055-square-foot one-bedroom (including a 172-square-foot balcony) or a 1,412-square-foot two bedroom (when connected with an adjacent veranda suite).
The newest and largest suite category, introduced first on Silver Nova, is designed for couples with a taste (and budget) for ultimate indulgence. The two otium suites, located aft on decks 6 and 7, feature 1,324 square feet of living space, including a 431-square-foot balcony with a private whirlpool, and offer 270-degree ocean views from both the living room and bedroom. The spacious bathroom has a large walk-in shower and a whirlpool tub. In addition to welcome Champagne, a fully stocked minibar and complimentary laundry and pressing, couples receive one Otium Spa treatment per guest and complimentary dinner for two at La Dame, Silver Nova’s exclusive, French fine-dining restaurant.
It’s worth noting that Silver Ray’s suites feature high-tech temperature and lighting controls. Each is equipped with a tablet, where guests can also access a digital version of the Chronicle, which lists the day’s activities. It’s also available on the in-room TV, but if you prefer a printed copy, you’ll have to ask for one via your butler or at guest services, and it will be delivered daily.
Silver Ray offers six wheelchair accessible suites, four of which are specially designed premium veranda suites and two of which are silver suites. Elevators and ramps offer access to all public areas of the ship, from deck 3 to deck 11.
Food & Drink
Silversea is known for its focus on culinary immersion, which is reflected in Silver Ray’s nine dining venues. There are six complimentary restaurants, although some do require reservations, as well as three others for which guests can pay extra to enjoy an even more indulgent experience. Silver Ray is also the fourth Silversea ship to feature the S.A.L.T. program, designed to highlight locally-inspired dining and cooking classes, as well as special food-and-wine focused shore excursions.
Six dining venues are included in the cruise fare. Guests can dine a la carte for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Atlantide, a spacious and beautifully-designed contemporary restaurant serving a mix of internationally inspired dishes. It’s a more formal setting than La Terrazza and The Marquee, the two other restaurants open morning, noon and night.
La Terrazza, located aft on deck 5 is a buffet-style eatery with indoor and outdoor seating and a variety of food stations offering both hot and cold options. These include omelets, waffles, yogurt, smoked fish, sliced fruit and freshly baked croissants and pastries for breakfast. Lunch options range from pasta and grilled fish and meats to regionally inspired dishes, salads, and soups. The cuisine here often exceeds expectations of a typical buffet breakfast or lunch, and the space is popular with guests who enjoy sampling a wide array of flavors.
Each night, after Silver Ray’s culinary crew has elevated the restaurant’s ambience with tablecloths, wine glasses and mood lighting, La Terrazza becomes an a la carte Italian restaurant with a classic menu of pastas, risottos, burrata salads, meat and fish dishes and desserts, with some menu items changing every few days. Reservations are required.
The Marquee, an al fresco, pergola-topped space on deck 10, is another complimentary option for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its menus are a la carte and at breakfast focus on healthy options (no mounds of bacon here), with smaller portions and unusual preparations (such as acai bowls and pumpkin pancakes) that may be too “healthy” for some guests. The lunch menu, however, is more extensive and offers a range of delicious options, from creative salads and poke bowls to burgers, falafel wraps, and fish ‘n chips. Guests can also indulge in one of the dozen or so Neapolitan-style pizza options from the Spaccanapoli menu. For dinner, The Marque also serves pizza, but most guests opt for The Grill menu and cook their own Kobe beef or fish over “hot rocks” placed on their table.
Rounding out the complimentary dinner options are two unique dining venues and a casual cafe. At the atmospheric and welcoming S.A.L.T. Kitchen, a Voyage Menu celebrates the flavors and cuisines of the overall region being visited and the destination-immersive Terrain Menu changes nightly based on the port of call. The wines served are also regionally sourced, and the desserts are fantastic. Reservations aren’t required. The second don’t miss dinner option is Silver Note, inspired by vintage supper clubs and featuring a creative small-plate menu served as guests enjoy live music. Reservations are required. Guests can also stop by deck 4’s Arts Café to order an espresso or cup of tea and a selection of sandwiches, pastries, and yogurt parfaits.
Silver Ray also has three extra-charge dining options for guests who are foodies or who want to savor a special occasion. La Dame — which occupies an elegant space featuring contrasting light-and-dark décor, Lalique crystal panels, and a Hirondelles crystal chandelier — offers a multi-course tasting menu specializing in modern preparations of traditional French classics. The cost is $160 per person (without a wine pairing, which is another $90 per person); reservations are required.
Japanese cuisine is the star at intimate Kaiseki, where a six-course omakase dinner costs $80 per person, but a more limited menu of sushi, sashimi, bao buns, and ramen is available for lunch on a complimentary basis without reservations.
A top option for the culinarily curious is S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table, a concept that was launched in 2023 on Silver Nova. A maximum of 18 people per night can reserve a spot in S.A.L.T. Lab, where guests also take cooking classes, to enjoy a tasting menu featuring as many as 11 courses and themed to the region. It’s quite interactive and social as a chef/host guides guests through the ingredients and preparation as the food is cooked and plated on the central counter. The cost is $180 per person and includes unlimited white and red wines chosen to accompany the dishes.
You don’t have to wander too far to order a drink on Silver Ray, where 10 bars and lounges please the palate both indoors and out. The most social bar is Dolce Vita, an ideal spot on deck 5 for a pre- or post-dinner cocktail and live piano music. There’s also live music in S.A.L.T. Bar on deck 10, where bartenders serve both classic cocktails and creative libations based on a guest’s flavor preferences. Guests with energy to burn at 11 p.m., can head to the aft Panorama Lounge on deck 5, where a DJ coaxes couples onto the dance floor and an outdoor space with chairs and sofas offers a breath of fresh nighttime air.
Silver Ray makes it easy to fall in love with imbibing in your favorite spirits outdoors (weather permitting, of course) with the aft-facing Dusk Bar, the perfect spot to enjoy a scenic sail away accompanied by live saxophone music, and the Pool Bar, a social hangout by day overlooking both the pool and the sea.
Other spots on Silver Ray to enjoy a beverage are the Observation Lounge on deck 10, where you can sip a cocktail from the S.A.L.T. Bar in quieter surroundings; The Shelter, a cozy nook on deck 3 beneath the soaring Atrium that specializes in Champagne; the Silver Note Bar, tucked in a corner of the Silver Note supper club, where you can order a cocktail (martinis are the specialty) while listening to live jazz; and The Connoisseur’s Corner, a smoking lounge with gentleman’s club-style Chesterfield chairs.
Entertainment
Silversea isn’t known for offering high-octane entertainment— you won’t find Broadway musicals, ‘80s cover bands or daring aerialists—but Silver Ray does offer live performances nightly that appeal to its mostly 60-plus demographic.
Musical production shows take place at 10 p.m. in the two-level Venetian Lounge, which accommodates 370 guests—meaning you’ll need to arrive early to snag a seat for popular performances. Shows by the ship’s ensemble of singers and dancers cover the typical small-luxury-cruise songbook of Broadway tunes and chart-toppers from the 1960s to 1980s, while guest acts range from Broadway and West End performers to classical musicians and comedians.
In addition to these splashier shows in the Venetian Lounge, Silver Ray also features live music by pianists, cellists, and other resident talents in its various bars and lounges.
Daytime activities include trivia contests, bridge instruction and tournaments, and shopping the ship’s boutiques. Cooking classes in S.A.L.T. Lab are complimentary and quite popular.
Spa & Fitness
Inspired by the bathing rituals of ancient Rome, the Otium Spa was introduced on 2022’s Silver Dawn. Here, as on Silver Nova, the spa space is located in the front of the ship on deck 5, and the concept has an ancient-meets-contemporary spin. A spare and serene reception area leads to the Rotunda, where eight treatment rooms are located. Dusky lightning and natural stone materials pair with lighting that replicates rippling water for a sensorial accompaniment as guests enjoy luxurious and revitalizing facials, massages, body treatments, medi-spa skin rejuvenation, and acupuncture. Several 100-minute Otium experiences that blend Mediterranean-inspired ingredients and techniques for the ultimate in indulgence are also available.
Silver Ray’s fitness center features a good selection of treadmills, bikes and ellipticals. Guests can also sign up for classes that include yoga, Pilates and circuit training.
Key cruising tips
Health & Safety
Cruise lines no longer enforce most COVID-19 protocols and Silversea does not require guests to be vaccinated—unless a specific country on the itinerary requires it. Guest are required to watch a safety video when they arrive in their suite, which details lifejacket and evacuation procedures, before heading in-person to their designated muster station at a specific time.
Dress Code
Silversea has ditched some of the formality in his dress code, but most guests still like to dress up for dinner and men should pack a jacket for evenings since it is sometimes required. Daytime attire can be casual, similar to outfits worn at a five-star resort. But after 6 p.m., Silver Ray requires an onboard dress code that falls into two categories.
On elegant casual evenings, ladies may wear trousers, blouses, skirts or casual dresses, while gentlemen should wear open-collar shirts and slacks (jacket optional). On formal optional evenings, guests may choose more formal attire, such as an evening gown or cocktail dress for ladies and a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit with a tie for gentlemen. On these nights, guests are also welcome to follow the elegant casual dress code, but gentlemen must still wear a jacket in all indoor spaces. And regardless of the daily dress code, jeans, shorts, sneakers, or flip flop-type footwear are prohibited in evening spaces after 6 p.m. Casual wear, however, is always suitable in outdoor venues. When dining at La Dame, gentlemen are always required to wear a jacket.
Junior Cruisers
Silver Ray, like all Silversea ships, welcomes children (six months or older) and teens, although all minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult age 21 or older in the same suite or a connecting suite. The ship does not offer onboard programming geared to junior cruisers and Silversea reserves the right to limit the number of children under the age of three on any sailing. While Silversea ships primarily attract mature couples and retired singles, during summer months, the holiday season and certain spring break periods, there are some multigenerational families on board, generally on 7-night itineraries.
Service
Silversea guests expect that service be of the highest caliber—and Silver Ray’s 544-person staff generally delivers. In addition to a suite attendant tasked with cleaning and tidying your accommodations, you will also be assigned a butler who can stock your mini-bar with your preferred beverages, make dining or spa reservations or handle your laundry or clothes pressing needs while you are on board. They will even unpack your luggage upon request—but if you don’t contact them with any wants or needs, you won’t see them very often. Crew members overall are welcoming and they’ll cheerfully greet you as you return to the ship and will often recall your preference for coffee or tea or your favorite pre-dinner cocktail.
Tipping
Crew gratuities (for stateroom attendants, butlers, restaurant and bar personnel, etc.) are included in all Silversea cruise fares.
