The Peech Boutique Hotel

$$$$ | 61 North St., Johannesburg, 2196, South Africa Fodor's Choice

The luscious garden with its two adjoining swimming pools is the central feature of this award-winning, owner-run boutique hotel that is equidistant from Melrose Arch, Rosebank, and Sandton. The dense vegetation pays homage to Joburg’s man-made forest and every room has a private outdoor space, balcony, or patio that makes it easy to forget you’re in a city. The welcoming eco-chic rooms are tastefully decorated with subtle hints of African design and are equipped with iPod docking stations, USB, and universal plug points. Eco-conscious guests will appreciate the heat pump water heating system, gray-water reticulation, recycling initiatives, and on-site vegetable and herb garden used for its two restaurants. The on-site bistro serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to guests. Basalt is its prix-fixe, fine-dining restaurant with optional wine pairing that is housed in the original 1940s heritage home and is also open to the public.

Pros

  • Fair trade certified since 2010
  • Spectacular service and personalized attention
  • Within safe walking distance of a park and delicatessen

Cons

  • Some rooms overlook the swimming pools
  • Fee to use the gym next door
  • Grounds can feel a little cramped

African Pride Melrose Arch, Autograph Collection

$$$ | 1 Melrose Sq., Johannesburg, 2076, South Africa

Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, this ultramodern hotel is within Melrose Arch, a high-security gated community with good dining and shopping options within safe walking distance. The Afro-chic decor mixes modern and traditional African influences that carry through from the lobby to the rooms, all anchored by the beautiful baobab tree. The rooms are well equipped, and each has a view of the pool and garden or overlooks a square. The pool area highlights the eccentric and modern taste that is echoed throughout the hotel, with trees planted in larger-than-life steel buckets, and tables and chairs set out in a few inches of water. There are two on-site restaurants: Aduna offers all-day dining while Sebule offers a grillhouse experience for lunch and dinner.

Pros

  • Part of Melrose Arch, a gated shopping, dining, and residential enclave
  • Airport shuttle to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB)
  • Two on-site restaurants

Cons

  • On-site parking R75 per day or valet parking R175 per day
  • Some might find it hard to relax in a high-energy environment
  • Outdoor swimming pool only
