Hermitage Hotel

$$$$ | 89 Terrace Rd., Aoraki Mount Cook, 7999, New Zealand Fodor's Choice

Famed for its stupendous mountain vistas from most rooms (there are floor-to-ceiling windows), the Hermitage is also home to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, a tribute to one of the most famous New Zealanders. There's a planetarium, the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Museum and theatre—perfect for when the clouds roll over. As the only hotel in the area, tours groups stay en masse over summer, so it pays to book well in advance.

Pros

  • Unbeatable mountain views
  • Most local activities are operated by the hotel
  • Excellent in-house dining

Cons

  • No gym, pool, or spa
  • Lots of tour groups in summer
  • Sprawling layout

Aoraki Alpine Lodge

$$$ | 101 Bowen Dr., Aoraki Mount Cook, 7946, New Zealand

This lodge, run by a young local family, has twin, triple, and family rooms, all with private bathrooms and two have kitchenettes. All rooms have mountain views (though not necessarily of Aoraki/Mount Cook). The basic alpine-style decoration uses lots of native timber and glass, and there's a huge stone fireplace in the lounge. There are shared kitchen facilities, a laundry, bicycles you can rent, and a small shop.

Pros

  • Great guest lounge with fireplace
  • Nice views from rooms
  • Bikes for rent

Cons

  • Not many meal options, so be prepared to buy groceries and cook
  • Thin walls
  • Lots of stairs to climb

Aoraki Court Motel

$$$ | 26 Bowen Dr., Aoraki Mount Cook, 7946, New Zealand

Being fully self-catering is a huge plus with the lack of shopping in Mount Cook Village, and Aoraki Court Motel has 25 modern studio or two-bedroom units, all of which have kitchenettes. While Aoraki/Mount Cook itself isn't visible from here, you get spectacular views of Mt. Sefton and the surrounding mountains, and you may get mugged by the cheeky paradise ducks trying to break into your room. Buy groceries at Twizel or Lake Tekapo before you arrive, or dine at the Hermitage Hotel farther down the road.

Pros

  • Removed from the hordes of bus groups
  • Great walks right out the door
  • Option to cook your own meals

Cons

  • Free Wi-Fi is patchy due to the remote location
  • Expensive for what you get
  • Books up months in advance
