4 Best Places to Shop in Coimbra, Coimbra and Central Portugal

One of the Baixa district's busiest and most attractive plazas is Praça do Comércio, once the site of the circus in Roman times. Today it's ringed with fashionable shops in 17th- and 18th-century town houses, and street vendors sell everything from combs to carpets on its corners. The Rua Eduardo Coelho, which fans out from the square, is lined with shoe stores and was once known as the Street of the Shoemakers.

In addition to the ubiquitous lace and cockerels, numerous stores in the city sell delicate blue-and-white Coimbra ceramics, most of them reproductions of 17th- and 18th-century patterns. This style is very distinct from the jolly earthenware associated with Portugal and can be difficult to find in other regions.

Lucky Lux

An eye-catching record store in the heart of Coimbra's historic downtown, Lucky Lux is a must-see for music lovers in the city. Whether you're on the hunt for rare fado vinyl or just fancy browsing the shelves, it's well worth a visit.

A Camponeza

Fodor's Choice

Part wine store, part delicatessen, and part cultural center, A Camponeza is open until midnight daily. The deceptively compact building hosts an incredible array of Port and table wines, which can be enjoyed on-site or bought to take home, and a flight of creaking wooden stairs leads to an art gallery and performance space upstairs.

Arte e Flor

Around the corner from the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro you'll find this family-run floral art house, selling a delightful collection of handmade products alongside fresh flowers and plants. Black-and-white photography on the walls shows reveals the historic side of the business.

Comur

A tourist attraction in itself, this shop specializing in canned fish looks like something from Alice's Wonderland. The bright colors, painted ceiling, and Baroque-inspired design draws the eye from outside, and a huge range of beautifully packaged cans line the walls. The Comur brand was established in 1942, and the retro packaging means these products make great gifts for foodies.
