Casa da Calçada

$$$ | Largo do Paço 6, Amarante, 4600-017, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Next to the venerable bridge spanning the river, this carefully restored nobleman's manor is one of Portugal's finest hotels, and a link in France's Relais & Chatêaux chain. Its comfortable ground-floor lounges now have a bright, contemporary look after a major refurbishment, concluded in early 2025, while guest rooms are decorated and furnished in an elegant, timeless style, with all the modern conveniences; most of views of the river or gardens. The Largo do Paço restaurant serves inventive Portuguese cuisine and remains a foodie destination, while the Canto Redondo is more of a smart bistro. The hotel's back garden is dotted with ancient trees that provide shade for two swimming pools (one reserved for adults only); there is also a small spa, and some of the region's oldest vines. Staff can arrange boating or kayaking trips, and there is a a golf course a 10-minute drive away.

Pros

  • One of the handsomest buildings in the region
  • Home to one of Portugal's best restaurants
  • Has the feel of a luxury resort

Cons

  • The many private events can be noisy
  • Indoor pool not large and can get crowded with families
  • A bit pricey

Monverde

$$ | Quinta de Sanguinhedo 166, Amarante, 4600-761, Portugal

It's all but impossible not to relax when staying at this "Wine Experience Hotel" set in lush, rolling countryside north of Amarante. A variety of lodgings are available, several of them in former farm buildings, and all extremely stylish and comfortable, with views of the surrounding vines and hills. The main building houses a large spa (whose treatments use Vinésime products, made with materials from vineyards) and a restaurant with seasonal tasting menus (€60, or €88 with wine pairing) as well as à la carte options; in summer, the bar by the outdoor pool also serves as a restaurant most nights. Visits can be arranged to the nearby Quinta da Lixa, a leading winery, but you can also book an on-site private tasting (from €28 for three wines and canapés), or learn how to blend your own wine to take home.

Pros

  • Wide range of accommodation includes family suites with kitchenette
  • Lovely rural setting
  • Well-equipped spa boasts an outdoor Jacuzzi and massages amid the vines

Cons

  • Somewhat remote
  • Indoor pool gets busy during the day
  • Few minutes' walk between some guest lodgings and the main building
