Portales de Mercaderes

Centro Histórico Fodor's Choice

This arcade on the Zócalo has attracted merchants since 1524. It's lined with jewelry shops selling gold (often by the gram) and authentic Taxco silver at prices lower than those in Taxco, where the overhead is higher. The best shop is Sombreros Tardán, which specializes in fashionable hats of every shape and style; it's more or less in the middle of the arcade.

Tianguis La Lagunilla

Centro Histórico Fodor's Choice

Enormous La Lagunilla has been the site of trade and bartering for more than five centuries. It's open every Sunday, when vendors set up along Confort Street and along the alley connecting to Paseo de la Reforma, selling everything from antique paintings and furniture to old magazines and plastic toys. Dress down, and watch out for pickpockets.

Cerería de Jesús

Centro Histórico
It's easy to miss this century-old candle shop in the thrum of pedestrian traffic along the eastern stretch of Venustiano Carranza Street, but step inside and you'll find marvelous creations in technicolor wax, from graceful taper candles in every shade of white, bone, and cream to elaborate towers of flowers dyed jade, ocher, and violet.

Dulcería de Celaya

Centro Histórico

A haven for anyone with a sweet tooth since 1874, Dulcería Celaya specializes in candied pineapple, guava, and other exotic fruits; almond paste; candied walnut rolls; and cajeta, a thick caramelized milk similar to Argentine dulce de leche. There's another branch in La Roma, but you have to come to Centro for the atmosphere.

El Palacio de Hierro

Centro Histórico

Upscale department store El Palacio de Hierro is noted for items by well-known designers and its seductive advertising campaigns. There are freestanding branches throughout the city, as well as anchor stores in malls such as Centro Santa Fe, Mexico's largest mall. If you're in need of any practical purchases, there's a good chance you'll find them here, but otherwise, it's not much different from any other department store.

Oaxaca en Mexico

Centro Histórico
Opened six decades ago, this family-run shop in the shadow of the Parroquia de la Sanísima Trinidad sells fresh products imported weekly from Oaxaca. Expect to find cheeses, herbs, chiles, and chocolate along with simple green-glazed pottery.

Shops at the Downtown Hotel

Centro Histórico

In the early 2010s, the 17th-century palace of the Miravalle family was turned into Centro's coolest hotel, which brought with it a collection of worthwhile shops arranged around its interior patios. The stores range from clothing stores like Casilda Mut, a tea shop, and a number of jewelry stores.
