Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Every room has a vineyard view at this self-described resort-style bed-and-breakfast whose glittering fusion of Thai luxury and Wine Country chic distinguishes it from its Napa Valley peers. Best known for Osha Thai on San Francisco's Embarcadero and that restaurant's local outpost, chef Lalita Souksamlane expands guests' horizons with sumptuously decorated rooms and suites (466–738 square feet), each based on a different region of her native land. Expect plush bedding, spacious showers, stand-alone tubs, and all the western technical mod cons. The hot tub and outdoor saltwater pool share the same vineyard views as the rooms, and there's a sauna. Phenomenal three-course breakfasts begin with seasonal local fruit, followed by croissants and various breads and a pan-Pacific main event that might include Thai eggs, shrimp congee, chicken pho, waffles, and pancakes.

Pros

  • Considerate staff
  • Phenomenal three-course breakfasts
  • Individually decorated rooms on Thai themes

Cons

  • Social butterflies may find pace too relaxed
  • Late checkout costly
  • Extra fee for children

Archer Hotel

$$$ | 1230 1st St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA Fodor's Choice

Ideal for travelers seeking design pizzazz, a see-and-be-seen atmosphere, and first-class amenities, this five-story downtown Napa property fuses New York City chic and Las Vegas glamour. Ultracontemporary rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers, wine refrigerators, and appropriate (and appropriately located) electronics docking stations come in several categories, from 285-square-foot Classic Kings to 780-square-foot Archer's Den suites with balconies and fireplaces. All rooms have beds draped in 100%-cotton linens and topped with down duvets and down pillows. There are also work desks, safes, and flat-screen TVs with premium channels. Small refrigerators are stocked with refreshments; there's a fee for them, but it's reasonable. The look overall is clean and sophisticated, with local art adorning the rooms and the hallways. Some of the best views are from upper-floor rooms facing south and west, though the southern ones pick up a little street noise on the balconies.

Pros

  • Restaurants by chef Charlie Palmer
  • Sky & Vine rooftop bar
  • Great views from upper-floor rooms (especially south and west)

Cons

  • Not particularly rustic
  • Can be expensive in high season
  • Occasional service and hospitality lapses

The Cottages of Napa Valley

$$$ | 1012 Darms La., Napa, CA, 94558, USA Fodor's Choice

Although most of the accommodations here date from the 1920s—when they rented for $5 a month (imagine that)—contemporary design touches and amenities, plush new furnishings, up-to-date bathrooms, and attentive service ensure a cozy 21st-century experience. Back in the day, Hollywood legends Clark Gable and Carole Lombard reportedly canoodled in one of the cottages, which form an oval around a courtyard shaded by oaks and other tall trees. The hum of traffic along nearby Highway 29 periodically breaks the spell outdoors, and occasionally indoors, but the aesthetic and service more than compensate. Perks include private porches and patios, kitchens stocked with utensils, a complimentary bottle of Chardonnay in each room, and a basket of pastries from Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery set on the doorstep each morning. If you're looking for a secluded unpretentious getaway with a dash of country glamour, you'll love this place.

Pros

  • Private porches and patios
  • Basket of Bouchon pastries each morning
  • Kitchen with utensils in each cottage

Cons

  • Hum of highway traffic
  • Drive required to restaurants
  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement

The Knoll Hotel Napa Valley, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

$$ | 320 Soscol Ave., CA, 94559, USA Fodor's Choice

Bright and spotless with a staff trained to please, this four-story property provides value with a splash of boutique style in its public areas. A double-sided fireplace catches the eye in the lobby, whose bar has views of the large outdoor patio. Morning light streams into the nearby breakfast room, where (for a fee) guests dine on dishes that include omelets, avocado toast, and pancakes. There's no lunch, but you can order a light dinner from the bar. The nondescript hallways give this corporate hotel's game away, but design touches like bathroom barn doors, leather headboards with decorative straps, and nightstands with faux-marble tops lend the guest rooms, done in shades of beige and brown, a modicum of flair. At the southern end of Napa's auto row on a busy four-lane road, the Knoll Hotel lacks Wine Country glamour but delivers a more than satisfactory experience.

Pros

  • Excellent for the price
  • Fitness center and hot tub
  • Well-designed bathrooms (most with showers)

Cons

  • On a busy road a mile from downtown (though no noise issues)
  • Short on Wine Country charm
  • No pool

Milliken Creek Inn

$$$$ | 1815 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA, 94558, USA Fodor's Choice

Perfect for a couple's weekend or midweek frolic, this secluded getaway with luxurious rooms is only a mile from the Oxbow Public Market and the Culinary Institute of America's CIA at Copia campus, and 1½ miles from downtown Napa's dining, shopping, and nightlife. The guest rooms' chic decor of muted grays, ivory, and browns puts the focus on the verdant natural setting, viewed in most cases through double doors that open onto patios with decks. Most rooms have river views, gas-burning fireplaces, and sitting areas, and all have custom art, Nespresso coffeemakers, refrigerators, and comfortable beds dressed in high-quality linens. Other perks include a cooked-to-order breakfast delivered to your room or elsewhere on the grounds, afternoon wine hour, freshly baked cookies and late-night cordials in the lobby, and evening s'mores kits.

Pros

  • Countryside feeling but near downtown
  • Larger Brookwood category rooms with stand-alone soaking tubs, fireplaces, and private decks with firepits
  • Breakfast delivered to your room or elsewhere on the grounds

Andaz Napa

$$$ | 1450 1st St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Part of the Hyatt family, this boutique hotel with an urban-hip vibe has spacious guest rooms with white-marble bathrooms stocked with high-quality products. Rooms come in several categories, from standard kings to loftlike rooms, some of which have a private balcony and face an interior terrace. Dual-sided glass-enclosed fireplaces facing both the sitting and sleeping areas are a nice touch in junior-suite rooms. The lobby is a cross between living room and lounge. There's no front desk. Instead, hosts appear with iPads for speedy check-in, immediately offering a beverage to make guests feel in good care.

Carneros Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 4048 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 121, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A winning combination of glamour, service, and pastoral seclusion makes this resort with freestanding board-and-batten cottages the perfect getaway for active lovebirds or families and groups seeking to unwind. The several bars, a tasting room (wine and spirits flights, plus beer and nonalcoholic beverages), and restaurants on property and the Town Square's lawn games area and Pavilion open-air lounge provide numerous opportunities for socializing, but when it's time to power down, the cottages and suites deliver the utmost in privacy. Natural light floods the cottages, whose French doors lead to private gardens, some with firepits and outdoor soaking tubs. Fireplaces, ethereal beds topped with plush linens, and spacious bathrooms with heated slate floors and large indoor-outdoor showers may make it difficult to summon the will to head to the hilltop infinity swimming pool and hot tub, where the vineyard views never fail to astound. The Hilltop dining room is open to guests only, but Farm and the Boon Fly Café, both public restaurants, are popular with visitors throughout the Wine Country.

Pros

  • Cottages have lots of privacy
  • Views from hilltop pool and hot tub
  • Heaters on private patios

Cons

  • Long drive to upvalley destinations
  • Least expensive accommodations pick up highway noise
  • Pricey pretty much year-round

The George

$$$ | 492 Randolph St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Tall palms tower over this restored three-story boutique inn, an elaborate 1891 Queen Anne–style structure once dubbed "the handsomest house in town.” The inn is decorated in a palette of soft whites, grays, and occasional browns, and the guest rooms contain custom-made beds with plush headboards outfitted with top-of-the-line mattresses and bedding. Each room enchants in its way. A second-floor corner room, for instance, has a rounded-bay-window sitting area, a marble-clad shower for two, and a generous spaciousness that makes it ideal for extended stays. A smaller third-floor accommodation in the middle of the house, its ceilings at artistically odd angles, is a cozy delight for one or two nights.

Pros

  • Period character with contemporary style
  • In a quiet neighborhood but only a few blocks from downtown
  • High ceilings add to feeling of spaciousness

Cons

  • First come, first served on-site parking (though ample street spaces in vicinity)
  • No elevator (but one ground-floor ADA room)
  • Per website, inn “is best suited for guests over 12"

The Inn on First

$$ | 1938 1st St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Guests gush over the hospitality at this inn, where the painstakingly restored 1905 mansion facing 1st Street contains five rooms, with five additional accommodations, all suites, in a building behind a secluded patio and garden. A welcome and romantic modern touch are the whirlpool tubs, two heart-shaped, with space for two. (With one exception, in the mansion, the tubs are in the main room, not the bathroom.) The rooms all have gas fireplaces as well.

Pros

  • Full breakfasts
  • Gas fireplaces and whirlpool tubs in all rooms
  • Away from downtown but not too far

Cons

  • No TVs
  • Some noise between rooms
  • Lacks pool, fitness center, and other amenities of larger properties

Inn on Randolph

$$$ | 411 Randolph St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A few calm blocks from the downtown action on a nearly 1-acre lot with landscaped gardens, the Inn on Randolph—with a Gothic revival–style main house and its five guest rooms plus five historic cottages out back—is a sophisticated haven known for its gourmet gluten-free breakfasts and snacks. Well-placed splashes of color jazz up the earth tones of the plush accommodations. Seven rooms have a gas fireplace; in the main house's Hannah Moore room, named for a member of the family that owned the property for nearly a century, dark tile surrounding the fireplace spans floor to ceiling without a mantel, a striking effect. In keeping with the rest of the inn, the bathrooms, all with heated floors, are contemporary, stylish, and spick-and-span. All the cottages and two rooms in the main house have spa tubs.

Pros

  • Quiet residential neighborhood
  • Spa tubs in cottages and two main-house rooms
  • Romantic setting

Cons

  • A bit of a walk from downtown
  • Expensive in-season
  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement

Napa River Inn

$$$ | 500 Main St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Part of a complex of restaurants and shops, this well-appointed if not showy waterfront inn is within walking distance of downtown hot spots. Guest rooms, many with river views, are housed in three structures. Those in the 1884 Hatt Building, done in Victorian style, are arguably the most romantic, with deep-red walls, maple floors and other original architectural details, and old-fashioned slipper tubs. Brighter colors dominate in the rooms of the Plaza and Embarcadero buildings. Some rooms have fireplaces, and all have flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and USB charging ports. Expect solicitous staffers and amenities aplenty, starting with pastries from a nearby bakery delivered to your door for breakfast.

Pros

  • Wide range of room sizes and prices
  • Near downtown action
  • No parking or resort fees

Cons

  • River views could be more scenic
  • Some rooms get noise from nearby restaurants
  • Dated decor in some rooms

Senza Hotel

$$$ | 4066 Howard La., Napa, CA, 94558, USA

Exterior fountains, gallery-quality outdoor sculptures, and rows of grapevines signal this boutique hotel's Wine Country–chic aspirations. The several-building complex, just off Highway 29 near the Oak Knoll District, is decorated in soothing shades, with haute fabrics, finishes, fixtures, and furniture throughout. Eighteen spacious rooms in two buildings have private balconies or patios, and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and heated floors; all rooms have large flat-screen TVs and fireplaces. Just as modern are the renovated accommodations in the 1870 Parker House, named for the local seaman who commissioned it. Among the quietest rooms at the hotel, which is just off the highway and has some noise issues, especially outdoors, are the three in the Nook, which has vineyard views.

Pros

  • High-style fixtures
  • Fireplaces in all rooms
  • Accommodating staff

Cons

  • Just off highway (rooms in the back are quieter)
  • 5-mile drive to downtown Napa or Yountville
  • Some bathrooms have no tub

Silverado Resort

$$$ | 1600 Atlas Peak Rd., Napa, CA, 94558, USA

If you like your resort to feel more country club than posh bastion, you'll likely find a stay at this 1,200-acre property satisfying. Two 18-hole golf courses command much of the real estate, along with endless lawns, a full-service spa, several pools, and tennis, pickleball, and bocce courts. When not in Napa, the owners of 340 condos on the property rent them through the resort. The ones managed by the resort, which range from studios to three-bedroom suites, all with kitchens or kitchenettes, are done up in muted brown and beige shades that keep the focus on the greenery outside. All the condos are decorated smartly enough, if not glamorously, and the beds are comfortable.  Owners at Silverado are not required to rent out units through the resort (Airbnb and VRBO list some), but the ones of the 340 that do are held to standards of quality and consistency. It’s recommended to choose these.

Pros

  • Two 18-hole golf courses, several pools, and tennis, pickleball, and bocce courts
  • The Grill for fine dining, a casual café, and a market selling grab-and-go items and wood-fired pizzas
  • Full-service spa

Cons

  • Rentals through third-party sites can be problematic (it’s best to book through resort)
  • Room decor not on par with similar Napa Valley resorts (though upgrades are scheduled for 2025)
  • 10–12 minute drive to Napa and Yountville restaurants

Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection

$$$$ | 200 Stanly Crossroad, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Grapevines surround this luxury property that opened in 2022 on 96 acres carved out of the titular, eight-times-larger Carneros ranch, whose grape-growing history dates to the 19th century. The mid-vineyard lifestyle isn't priced for mere mortals—even during the slowest periods, the rooms and cottages here start at four figures—but the resort delivers a full-service (wellness sanctuary, pools, restaurants) ultrahaute-rustic experience. Oriented toward their outdoor living spaces, the 135 mod-farmhouse guest accommodations start at 400 square feet for a king with a private terrace to nearly 3,000-square-foot cottages with multiple soaking tubs and lavish patios. In addition to the resort lodgings, two types of residences—villas and vineyard homes—are available for booking when the owners are away.

Pros

  • Ultrahaute-rustic experience
  • Wellness sanctuary with pool, spa, and high- and low-tech treatments
  • Artisanal cocktails and well-conceived dishes at Bear restaurant

Cons

  • Location near San Pablo Bay can get breezy
  • 10-minute drive to downtown

White House Napa

$$$ | 443 Brown St., Napa, CA, 94599, USA

Redwoods and other trees shade this three-story 1886 gingerbread Victorian that 2024 renovations transformed into a homelike contemporary inn with boutique-hotel flourishes. One smallish (223 square feet) room has a queen bed, but the rest, from 289 to around 500 square feet, are spacious, and some have high ceilings. The furniture and lighting fixtures tilt more modern upscale than period, but they've been thoughtfully selected and suit the setting. All the rooms and a suite with a separate sitting area have HDTVs, small refrigerators, and Nespresso coffeemakers. A few King Deluxe rooms have shared balconies overlooking the front garden. A buffet breakfast with a hot entrée is laid out each morning in a living-room-like space whose deck overlooks the pool, hot tub, and landscaped backyard.

Pros

  • On a residential street
  • Outdoor pool and hot tub
  • A short walk to restaurants and tasting rooms

Cons

  • No elevator to upper floors (but ADA rooms available)
  • Old-school B&B fans may miss the personal touch
  • Some housekeeping glitches
