36 Best Hotels in North County and Around, California

Background Illustration for Hotels

Like the restaurants, hotels in the North County reflect the geography and attractions where they are set. There are a number of luxury resorts that offer golf, tennis, entertainment, and classy service. For those who want the ultimate pampered vacation, the North County holds two world-class spas: Cal-a-Vie and the Golden Door. Along the beach, there are quite a few stand-alone lodgings that attract the beach crowd; while some lack in appeal and service, they still charge a big price in summer. Lodgings in the Carlsbad area are family-friendly, some with their own water parks. In Temecula, some of the best and most delightful lodgings are tied to wineries; they offer a whole experience: accommodations, spa, dining, and wine. One-of-a-kind bed-and-breakfasts are the rule in the Julian area.

Europa Village

Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Visit Europe without ever leaving California with three boutique hotels modeled after old-world villages in Spain, France, and Italy. For a taste of Spain, head to Bolero with 10 spacious casitas, each offering Spanish charm with private courtyards and sweeping views of the olive trees and vineyards. Housed within a Spanish “village,” casitas have direct access to a tapas restaurant and tasting room. Experience all things French at C’est la Vie, complete with a rose garden, wine cave, and neighboring 10-bedroom hillside hideaway called "The Inn." As the latest addition, Vienza is inspired by the Italian countryside with Roman columns, Tuscan vines, a piazza, and Mercato delicatessen serving pizza, pasta, paninis, and gelato. While Europa is still expanding the “Italian region”, blueprints show Vienza will round out the offerings with 40 rooms, a spa, and a pool slated for completion by 2028. As they say, "Rome wasn't built in a day."

  • Privacy and scenery
  • Bolero casitas 101 and 103 have soaking tubs
  • Everything you need in one location

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Elegant and luxurious hacienda-style casitas—appointed with corner fireplaces, luxurious bathrooms, and shuttered French doors leading to private patios—are nestled among 45 acres in one of Southern California's most affluent neighborhoods. Each of the 900- to 1350-square-foot suites feels like a private home, with wood-beamed ceilings, hardwood floors, steam showers, and hand-painted tile bathrooms. Throughout the gated grounds are tennis courts, walking trails, and the enchanting spa with an adjacent fitness center, two pools, yoga pavilion, and Pilates studio. Daily resort activities range from tequila tastings and lawn croquet to fireside s'mores and yoga for kids. Stop by the Pony Room for cocktails and lunch. The Palms at Indian Head

$$ | 2220 Hoberg Rd., Borrego Springs, CA, 92004, USA

Spectacular desert views can be had from this small, 1950s hotel that displays an authentic mid-century modern look, with Mondrian influences and original art by local artists. For extreme privacy, request a poolside room with a fireplace. When the place was called the Hoberg Resort, Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and Clark Gable, Lon Chaney Jr., among others, vacationed here. Although property owners have come and gone, it only gets better with time, now showcasing an Olympic-size pool and dive bar—literally, with underwater windows to the pool. As one of the most luxurious hotels in San Diego, this retreat completed a $60 million resort-wide transformation in 2020, with redesigned rooms, a new lobby, family pool with water park, luxury cabanas, and three new restaurants including Ember & Rye by celebrity chef Richard Blais. It's a play-and-relax haven with an Arnold Palmer–designed golf course, a tennis club, two pools, and views overlooking Batiquitos Lagoon and the Pacific among its 250 acres. The 540-square-foot rooms are remarkably spacious and feature every possible amenity including king beds, private terraces with water views, and deep soaking tubs. Children have their own pool with waterslides, and can join parents in the Topgolf Swing Suite with virtual screens, a golfing simulator, and arcade games. The Ponto Lago restaurant serves Baja-inspired cuisine, or for something less formal, head to the terrace for cocktails and live music (Friday and Saturday).
