FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Visit Europe without ever leaving California with three boutique hotels modeled after old-world villages in Spain, France, and Italy. For a taste of Spain, head to Bolero with 10 spacious casitas, each offering Spanish charm with private courtyards and sweeping views of the olive trees and vineyards. Housed within a Spanish “village,” casitas have direct access to a tapas restaurant and tasting room. Experience all things French at C’est la Vie, complete with a rose garden, wine cave, and neighboring 10-bedroom hillside hideaway called "The Inn." As the latest addition, Vienza is inspired by the Italian countryside with Roman columns, Tuscan vines, a piazza, and Mercato delicatessen serving pizza, pasta, paninis, and gelato. While Europa is still expanding the “Italian region”, blueprints show Vienza will round out the offerings with 40 rooms, a spa, and a pool slated for completion by 2028. As they say, "Rome wasn't built in a day."

Pros

  • Privacy and scenery
  • Bolero casitas 101 and 103 have soaking tubs
  • Everything you need in one location

Cons

  • Breakfast not included
  • Not pet-friendly
  • Two-night minimum stay on weekends

Domaine Chardonnay

$$$$ | 33810 Madera de Playa Dr., Temecula, CA, USA Fodor's Choice

Owners Laura and Mike Wieters opened the most romantic private winery estate in Temecula to bring exclusivity, perfection, and a splash of Burgundy to the heart of Temecula. A variety of award-winning estate wines produced on-site by Mike, large soaking tubs, posh decor, marble walk in showers, and a full organic breakfast (delivered to your room) await guests. Enter the impressive front gate and prepare to be awed with manicured gardens and a stone mansion connecting their main residence to three private guest suites, ranging in size from 400 to 600 square feet. While there’s no shared common area, privacy is pinnacle with each room having its own large walled garden with endless vineyard and mountain views. Bathroom amenities include an organic line of products infused with lavender and other herbs from the onsite garden. As an interior designer, Laura curated every inch of the elegant property, right down to the hand-painted floors; while Mike, an architectural designer and landscape architect who designed Domaine Chardonnay from the ground up, is also one of the top wine makers in the valley. Each morning, hot air balloons gently float by above the vineyard, meaning you capture the moment in the comfort of your bathrobe with a Nespresso in hand. A behind-the-vines tour and other tasting experiences are available upon request.

Pros

  • Friendly owners with attention to detail
  • Exceptional breakfast delivered to your room

Cons

  • No children under 12, so not ideal for families
