Hawi and Kapaau
These North Kohala towns have an interesting history, and today they are full of lovingly restored vintage buildings housing fun and funky shops and galleries, as well as eateries worth a stop for a quick bite. Near the birthplace of King Kamehameha, the towns thrived during the plantation days, once bustling with hotels, saloons, and theaters—even a railroad. They took a hit when "Big Sugar" left the island, but both are blossoming again, thanks to strong local communities, tourism, athletic events, and an influx of artists keen on honoring the towns' past. Hawi is internationally known as the turnaround point for the cycling portion of the Ironman World Championship triathlon event.
