The Campbell

Midtown East Fodor's Choice

Classy tipplers and well-dressed commuters pack into this hidden away Grand Central Terminal bar (especially during the evening rush), but you can still have a romantic time in one of Manhattan's most elegant rooms. The restored space dates from the 1920s, when it was the private office and reception hall of a financier named John W. Campbell, who entertained friends and colleagues here. Sample the good life as you sip cocktails from club chairs and banquettes amid a 100-year-old leaded glass window or come to hear live jazz on weekend nights. The proprietor also offers the smaller Campbell Palm Court and enclosed, outdoor Campbell Terrace; the latter is just outside in the former taxi driveway.

Agency of Record

Midtown East

A sleek, smart, and dimly lit cocktail bar, Agency of Record is an ad-agency-theme drinking spot. The seriously retro late-'50s/early-'60s vibe of the place will give you a yen for sipping a classic cocktail like a dirty martini or a grasshopper, as DJs spin vintage tunes and the kitchen cooks up sliders, Japanese-style fried chicken, and charred carrots.

The Bar Downstairs and Kitchen

Midtown East

The bar in the basement of the Andaz 5th Avenue hotel may have a generic moniker, but it certainly has pedigree. Alchemy Consulting, a joint venture from Chicago's Violet Hour and New York's Death & Co., designed the cocktails here; look for spins on the Negroni and Manhattan in the sleek subterranean space. Sample a curated flight of New York State whiskeys, or choose between a fine range of Negronis and Japanese highballs. The New York--sourced food menu is similarly upscale, with small plates and a short list of mains.

Bierhaus NYC

Midtown East

Guests pile onto long benches at communal tables at this Bavarian-style beer hall, as costumed barmaids serve imported German beers, liqueurs, pretzels, and shot-skis (a ski with shot glasses attached). Along with having a 50-foot balcony, a glass ceiling retracts in the summer, ensuring that a stop here is always a good time. Appetizers are large, and beer can be ordered in a 2-liter (glass) boot if you wish.

King Cole Bar

Midtown East

Maxfield Parrish's justly beloved 1906 mural of "Old King Cole" and his artful court (made famous by the 18th-century nursery rhyme) was fully renovated in summer 2024 and now gleams just like the day after it was finished. It adds to the already considerable elegance at this romantic and essential Midtown lounge. Try the Bloody Mary—since this is where this spicy drink was introduced to Americans as a "Red Snapper" back in 1934, with an nonalcoholic version available—and be ready to pay for the privilege of drinking in this legendary establishment.

Ophelia Lounge NYC

Midtown East

Twenty-six stories above street level, Ophelia is the pinnacle of The Beekman Tower. An impressive space for after-work drinks and romantic dates alike, the bar has a greenhouse-style terrace with spectacular 360-degree views of Midtown and the East River. The emphasis is on mixology and cocktail presentation, and the signature drink, Ophelia’s Ascension (with Maker's Mark and mezcal), is a crowd favorite. While the ambience will draw guests back, service can be iffy. Note that tabletop seating has a two-hour max time limit. However, a seat at the bar is offered more leisurely, where old photos and keepsakes from the building's past—it was once a women-only space—are preserved within the counter. If you can, make a reservation and arrive in time to catch the sunset.

Sofia Wine Bar

Midtown East

This family-owned wine-bar is a neighborhood gem with wine sourced from all over the world, and the homemade recipes and handmade pizzas create an authentic Italian vibe. The dimly lit venue features a mix of unique art amid this intimate space full of exposed brick, rustic wood furnishings, and chandeliers. Global wine lovers and locals alike appreciate the vast selection of old- and new-world wines (by the glass or bottle), including a special wine of the month, that all can be paired with made-from-scratch small plates. While their classic margarita pizza is a perfect selection, their burrata pizza with a fresh plum tomato sauce is quite delicious.

The Townhouse of New York

Midtown East

Distinguished, mature men from the Upper East Side meet younger would-be versions of themselves at this "gentlemen's club" and piano bar. The attire is "uptown casual" if not fancier (though jackets are not required), and there are daily happy hours, $2 off from 4 to 8 pm, plus weekly special events.

Uncle Charlie's Piano Lounge

Midtown East

A fun find for LGBTQ+ travelers and allies, Uncle Charlie's is a second-floor haven for happy hours, piano singalongs, and quiet breaks on the back outdoor patio. It's a casual scene with flirty regulars and attentive bartenders pouring 'til the wee hours (from 4 pm to 4 am nightly). The daily happy hour special consists of $2 off any cocktail or spirit, from 4 to 8 pm, and open-mic night happens from 8 pm to 2 am daily except Sunday.

Upstairs at The Kimberly

Midtown East

The 30th-floor penthouse rooftop lounge atop The Kimberly Hotel offers cocktails amid aerial views of Midtown Manhattan year-round. You may even catch a glimpse of the Chrysler Building, and can opt to sip on a drink named for the famous Art Deco skyscraper itself. A selection of small plates round out the rest of the menu, with such popular orders as charcuterie or cheese boards and Kobe beef sliders. A retractable glass ceiling, heated floors, and outdoor fireplace make this bar perfect for any season.
