The James New York – SoHo

$$ | 27 Grand St., New York, NY, 10013, USA Fodor's Choice

This hotel on the edge of SoHo never sacrifices comfort for style, so it's no wonder there's a high percentage of return customers—creative types, businesspeople, fashionistas, and anyone else with deep pockets. The lobby has fabulous double-height windows from which to appreciate unobstructed views—plus fresh-baked cookies, coffee, wine, and fresh fruit. Guest rooms are swanky and simple, with dark-wood floors, floor-to-ceiling murals, and more huge windows facing south and west. A plant in every room (ostensibly a carbon-offsetting touch) and triple-house-filtered bottled water all contribute to an environmentally friendly ethos. Jimmy, the rooftop bar next to the outdoor pool, is always a winner. Bring your fashion A-game: the James attracts a well-dressed crowd.

Pros

  • Stellar service
  • Superb views from tall windows
  • Cool SoHo location

Cons

  • Rooftop bar is expensive
  • Bathrooms offer little privacy
  • Noise from the bar can be bothersome

The Manner

$$$$ | 58 Thompson St., New York, NY, 10012, USA Fodor's Choice

Flicking on its lights for the first time in autumn 2024, this buzzy boutique property from the Standard hotel folks dials it back a few decades, channeling the 1970s with comfy larger-than-average rooms bathed in oranges and yellows and soft-glowing lights illuminating hardcover books and design accoutrements that harken back to a time when Richard Nixon was still in the White House. The only thing that's missing are ashtrays. The Otter, the in-house restaurant from talented chef Alex Stupak, serves up seafood-forward comfort fare, while the rooftop bar is great for cocktail sipping and gawking at the skyline views. The Apartment is a guest-only dining room for breakfast and the "aperitivo hour" ('til 7 pm daily) for complimentary wine, Negronis, and snacks.

Pros

  • Guests get priority reservations at buzzy in-house eatery
  • Staff is go-out-of-their-way friendly.
  • Spacious, tiled bathrooms

Cons

  • No TVs in rooms
  • Light controls are confusing
  • Ho-hum views from rooms

NoMo SoHo

$$ | 9 Crosby St., New York, NY, 10013, USA
Mondrian Soho, SoHo
Mondrian Soho

Fairy-tale-inspired Miami style and a chic SoHo vibe make this hotel a winner for anyone looking for a downtown pied-à-terre. Standard rooms are on the small side, but with the serene blue-and-white color scheme, mirrored surfaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the design (and the striking views) helps overcome space concerns. Opt for a room on one of the higher floors and shower with sweeping skyline views (but leave modesty at home: showers have floor-to-ceiling glass, too). Downstairs, the public spaces are classy and inviting, with a beautiful arched passageway lined with ivy and sparkling lights serving as the entrance, a pebbled garden with a swing to sit in, and an intimate restaurant set in a greenhouse-like space, lit by candles and chandeliers.

Pros

  • Affordable for the location
  • Pretty garden with NoMo Kitchen restaurant
  • Fabulous views from floor-to-ceiling windows

Cons

  • Elevators can be slow
  • Standard rooms are on the small side
  • Underground fitness center

11 Howard

$$ | 11 Howard St., New York, NY, 10013, USA

A sleek hotel with a design that melds mid-century modern furniture and Scandinavian minimalism, 11 Howard is an elegant downtown base. Standard rooms can feel a bit beige, but the colorful neighborhood and the scene at Le Coucou, the trendy restaurant downstairs, provide plenty of distraction. If the chic restaurant scene is more than you're looking for, the Library serves drinks and breakfast in a soothing guest-only space that's also ideal for getting work done.

Pros

  • A relative bargain for the area
  • Minimalist but comfortable
  • Sleek downtown ambience

Cons

  • Vibe feels too cool for some
  • Some guests complain about street noise
  • Canal Street locale can be less than calm outside

This boutique hideaway in an 1825 Federal-style building is a favorite of design enthusiasts, both for its striking five-story atrium and for its convenient location near the neighborhood's best shops and galleries. Rooms are tight on space, though if you can splurge on the penthouse, you'll get a massive terrace. This property is a prime pick for guests who want to get a feel for downtown day-to-day life.

Pros

  • Good location for SoHo shopping and dining
  • Excellent free breakfast
  • Quiet, laid-back vibe

ModernHaus SoHo

$$ | 27 Grand St., New York, NY, 10013, USA

Sophisticated and sleek, and on the edge of SoHo, the ModernHaus wows with understated luxury that never sacrifices comfort for style. The guest rooms are elegant, from the dark-wood floors to the well-chosen art, but the real focus is the view of Manhattan out the giant windows—who needs a TV (there is one) when you can just stare out at the city? Jimmy, the rooftop bar next to the seasonal plunge pool, has a nightly DJ, but bring your fashion A-game as it attracts a well-dressed crowd. The spacious 17th-floor gym has amazing views, too.

Pros
