Sackets Harbor
This Lake Ontario village was settled in 1800, and many of the buildings here are from the early 19th century. The visitor center has a walking-tour brochure you can follow through the historic district. Sackets Harbor was the site of two engagements during the War of 1812, and you may stroll the battlefield where they took place. In summer the harbor bustles with boaters and charter cruises. In winter hardy cross-country skiers and snowmobilers take over.
