The Graham and Co.

$$ | 80 Rte. 214, Phoenicia, NY, 12464, USA Fodor's Choice
Recalling the summer camp atmosphere of the '50s and '60s and the heyday of the Catskills, the Graham and Co. has weekend bonfires, hammocks hanging under the trees, a volleyball net (often transformed into an outdoor movie screen), and simple but cool guest rooms decorated with vintage maps and fans, rough hewn wood, and industrial light fixtures. Float in an inner tube in the oval pool or grab one of the free bikes and head to the bustling main drag of the charming town of Phoenicia. There are no TVs in the rooms, just Tivoli radios and free Hi-Fi. Other listed amenities include "togetherness" and "camraderie." Explain that to the kids!

Pros

 • Fun blast from the past
 • Easy to socialize with other guests
 • Great place to unplug

Cons

 • A bit too relaxed for some people

Onteora Mountain House

$$$ | 96 Piney Point Rd., Boiceville, NY, 12412, USA Fodor's Choice

The spectacular Catskills vistas at this B&B—the former summer home of mayonnaise magnate Richard Hellman—will leave you breathless. A massive stone fireplace presides over the great room, a magnificent space with a soaring ceiling. Oriental rugs, scattered across wide-plank honey-color floors, cushion your every step, and Asian antiques and American pieces enjoy an elegant coexistence. Some rooms have fireplaces and hot tubs, and one has a window seat with dazzling valley views. Play billiards in the cavernous game room, or sweat it out in the sauna. The loveliest spot might be the 60-foot dining terrace, where you're treated to expansive views of the mountains.

Pros

 • Perfect for romantic getaways
 • Great views
 • Stunning outdoor dining porch

Cons

 • Summer weekends must be booked months in advance
 • Somewhat remote location

The Emerson Resort & Spa

$$$ | 5340 Rte. 28, Mount Tremper, NY, 12457, USA
A top-to-bottom renovation made this longtime favorite once again one of the region's best destinations, especially for families who take advantage of activities in and around the hotel, from fishing and tubing in the summer to skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, as well as excellent on-site amenities, like a spa and restaurant. Head to the nearby towns of Phoenicia and Woodstock for an afternoon of antiquing, pamper yourself with couples massages and relaxing body wraps in the spa, or catch some rays by the pool. The restaurant draws locals for its farm-to-table cuisine. Rooms in the Adirondacks-style lodge have beautiful wood trim, peaked ceilings, and a relaxed vibe. Those in the inn are more modern and include touches like gas fireplaces and jetted tubs.

Pros

 • Plentiful amenities
 • Close to area attractions
 • Top-notch restaurant

Cons

 • Right on main road
 • Lacking historic charm

Four Corners Country Inn

$$ | 1564 Wittenberg Rd., Mount Tremper, NY, 12457, USA
As you pull into the gravel driveway and climb the steps of this plain but pretty 1850s Victorian, you will feel like you're visiting a favorite relative. Named for nearby hamlets like Chichester and Woodstock, the reasonably priced rooms are simply decorated and include some well-chosen antiques. Some, like the Wittenberg, are unusually large and can accommodate the whole family. The dining room is a showplace, with a long, elegant bar that was made in the 1920s. A lavish breakfast is included.

Pros

 • Great dining
 • Pretty location
 • Reasonable rates

Cons

 • Far from activities

Glass Mountain Inn

$ | 108-110 Rte. 214, Phoenicia, NY, 12464, USA
After opening several hip spots in Brooklyn, Jeff and Brooke Bailey decided to head to the Catskills to open an inn for creative types like them with uniquely curated decor that includes original artworks, hand-sewn quilts, poetry books, and a retro collection of vinyl. The result is the Glass Mountain Inn, where the couple resides on-site with their young children. They're friendly folks, happy to pick you up at the local bus station or arrange for some vegetarian food to be delivered to your room. You can play volleyball or croquet on the tree-shaded lawn, or borrow one of the bikes for a morning spin. Esopus Creek is just across Route 241. There are two rustic suites: a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom with an old-timey vibe and plenty of country charm. If you want more privacy, there's a two-bedroom cottage with a private deck and an upright piano.

Pros

 • Warm and welcoming vibe
 • Good for families
 • Charming decor

Cons

 • Right on main road

Kate's Lazy Meadow Motel

$$$ | 5191 Rte. 28, Mount Tremper, NY, 12457, USA

The exterior of this single-story 1950s motel reveals little of what's inside the meticulously appointed suites, owned by Kate Pierson of the B-52s. The funky decor includes vintage pieces—Eames furniture, Russel Wright kitchenware—as well as custom wallpaper and handcrafted bathroom tiles and shower curtains. Most of the suites have a mint '50s kitchen and a sitting area with a gas fireplace; some suites have sleeping lofts and private decks. Lush gardens designed by Dean Riddle (a nationally known garden writer and green thumb) surround the red motel. A bonfire pit overlooks Esopus Creek, where you can fish for trout.

Pros

 • Fun and funky vibevery different property
 • Wide variety of accommodations

Cons

 • Still feels like a motel

Phoenicia Belle

$ | 73 Main St., NY, 12464, USA
If you're into Victoriana, you'll love this restored 1875 house and all its architectural flourishes and antique furnishings in the heart of Phoenicia. All four rooms are individually decorated and two share a bathroom. Our favorite is Ardrey's Suite, which has its own sitting room with handsome wingback chairs; Violet's Suite has its own 1930s-style kitchen. Enjoy an organic breakfast on the front porch, or take a stroll to Sweet Sue's or one of the other stellar places for morning meals.

Pros

 • Gorgeous building
 • Location in center of town
 • Smoke-free property

Cons

 • Street is busy on summer weekends
