Uptown Charlotte, the city's "downtown," is ideal for walking. The city was laid out in four wards around Independence Square, at Trade and Tryon Streets. The Square, as it is known, is the center of the Uptown area. In recent years, Uptown has become increasingly user-friendly, with restaurants, bars, and museums tightly packed into a small area. If you’re in town for only a short while, this is the place to be.
