Ashland's stately 1925 landmark hotel towers seven stories over the center of downtown, with 70 rooms done with a preponderance of gentle fall colors and unconventional decor—think French-inspired botanical-print quilts and lampshades with leaf designs. The hotel offers theater, sports, and romance packages; a full range of soothing treatments is available at the hotel's adjacent Waterstone Spa; and an on-site bar and restaurant serves some of the best food in town.

Every plush suite in this converted late-19th-century mill has a geographic theme—the Normandy is outfitted with rustic country French prints and furniture, while Moroccan, Danish, and New Mexican motifs are among the designs in other units—and each sitting room–bedroom combo has its own entrance, a full kitchen or kitchenette, and a deck amid stunning gardens and just inches from burbling Ashland Creek. Privacy, space, high-concept elegance, and dynamite breakfasts served in an understated central dining room make this well-run place an alternative to up-close-and-personal traditional bed-and-breakfasts.

Hoteliers Doug and Becky Neuman (who also run the excellent Ashland Springs Hotel and Lithia Springs Resort) have transformed this '70s-era resort into a stylish yet affordable retro-cool compound, retaining the property's fabulous globe lights, soaring lobby windows, and beam ceilings while adding many period-style furnishings. Standard rooms and spacious suites are set in two separate buildings, and its 14 acres include two tennis courts, a pool, a hot tub, fitness rooms, and a restaurant, Luna Cafe, that turns out reasonably priced, farm-to-table pizzas, sandwiches, and other light fare (there's also a market selling gourmet picnic supplies and local beer and wine). In a part of Oregon abundant with cookie-cutter chain properties, this is a refreshingly distinct and fun alternative for value-seeking travelers.

The world's top fly-fishermen converge at this secluded forest inn, high in the Cascades above the North Umpqua River; others come simply to relax in the reading nooks or on the decks of the riverside guest cabins nestled below soaring fir trees. Lodging choices include riverside cabins, forest bungalows (some sleep up to six), and riverside suites; the bungalows and suites have kitchens. Make reservations well in advance, especially for a stay between July and October, the prime fishing months (guide services are available, as are equipment rentals and sales). The exceptionally good restaurant, which offers occasional winemaker and guest-chef dinners, caters primarily to guests, but also has a limited number of tables available by reservation. It's also open for breakfast and lunch to the general public.

Pacific Northwest–inspired art, handmade furnishings, and fine fabrics fill this rambling timber-frame home overlooking the Rogue River, 11 handsomely outfitted cabins, and an A-frame bungalow that comprise the most luxurious accommodations between Ashland and Eugene. Part of the new boutique-style, mid-range brand of tropical-inspired Margaritaville resorts, this laid-back hotel has smartly designed rooms and common spaces and a large pool with cabanas and a friendly bar and grill. It's a couple of miles south of downtown Medford on a convenient but busy road. 

The spotless pioneer period antiques and the wealth of well-chosen amenities (fireplaces, saunas, whirlpool tubs, double steam showers) at this eight-room 1861-vintage inn—with four additional luxury cottages—evoke the Wild West with an urbane, sophisticated aesthetic. Complimentary full breakfast is served in the elegant restaurant, which also serves lunch and dinner to both guests and nonguests.

Set amid pine forests about midway between Grants Pass and Crescent City and a half hour from Oregon Caves, this bucolic camping resort offers several lodging options, including teepees, small cabins, and one large three-bedroom cabin with private bathrooms that's ideal for families. Although the teepees have beds, guests must bring their own bedding. 

You sleep among the leaves in the tree houses of this extraordinary resort—the highest is 37 feet from the ground, one has an antique claw-foot bath, and another has separate kids' quarters connected to the main room by a swinging bridge. Other units have stained-glass windows, sleeping lofts, and other quirky features, and there is also an earthbound cabin with a view of the old-growth forest. Keep in mind that the least expensive units don't have bathrooms—guests use the common facilities, which also include a game area, fire pit, and common kitchen.

This cheerfully restored, eco-friendly, midcentury-modern complex has a hip, quirky vibe and offers the convenience of a downtown location with relatively moderate prices. Vaulted ceilings, glass showers, private porches, fireplaces, and breakfast nooks are among the features in the individually decorated cottages, some of which have two bedrooms, and the centrally landscaped pool with fire pit is a fun place to relax and mingle. The owners also run the funky and historic Columbia Hotel, a few blocks away.

The setting adjacent to one of the state's top golf courses is a major draw for this small boutique hotel with a dozen contemporary chalet-style suites featuring fireplaces and either balconies or patios. With sweeping mountain views, this serene compound is also a great lodging option if you prefer a quiet location that's en route to Crater Lake and close to area hiking as well as several wineries. 

This clean and attractively updated vintage motor inn is just across the river (and beside a bridge with a pedestrian lane) from downtown and makes a convenient and economical base for exploring the Umpqua Valley.

Rooms in the main lodge are spacious and modern; the two- to three-bedroom town houses have many amenities, such as built-in entertainment centers and outdoor hot tubs. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, sailing, fishing, and wildlife-watching are some of the prime activities, and a full-service spa provides a range of relaxing treatments.

Offering cozy, well-outfitted cabins with loft sleeping areas and canvas tents, this verdant glamping and RV resort is set along the picturesque Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, about 45 minutes east of Roseburg and on the way to Crater Lake. The staff is welcoming and helpful, and the accommodations are spotless and include comfy linens (including heated blankets), reliable Wi-Fi, grills or fire pits, and attractive furniture. There's tons to do in the immediate area: hiking, biking, rafting, and more. 

Rooms and suites in this upscale Victorian have character and restful charm—some have fireplaces, refrigerators, and wet bars, and private exterior entrances, and most are well suited to having one or two children in the room. Not only are the meals smashing, the location is smack-dab in the center of Ashland's hopping theater scene. The celebrated restaurant, Alchemy, relies upon locally grown produce, fresh fish and meats, including liberal use of herbs from its own garden. The breakfasts are works of art.
