Summerville
Victorian homes, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, line the public park in this intact small town that serves as a bedroom community to Charleston. Colorful gardens brimming with camellias, azaleas, and wisteria abound. Many downtown and residential streets have been laid out to curve around tall pines, as a local ordinance prohibits their destruction. Summerville was built by wealthy slaveholders and is now attracting young, professional families and well-to-do retirees transplanted from colder climates. It has an artsy bent to it and some trendy eateries have opened, many of which are satellite locations of popular Charleston spots, like Taco Boy and Hall's Chophouse. While here, enjoy a stroll in the park, or go antiquing on the downtown shopping square.
