Why We Like It

The thing about Austin is that it’s not very ‘Austin’ these days. Downtown, with its chain businesses and office towers, could easily be plucked out of any state. East is the old school postcard travelers come for, sprinkled with dive bars, live music dens, and vintage boutiques housed in bungalows. While the area has certainly undergone gentrification, new additions such as ARRIVE add rather than take away character. It’s modern but has quirks and one of the most interesting exteriors of the modern landscape.

Fodor's Expert Review

East Austin’s landmark, ARRIVE, is a masonry structure shaped as a giant piece of abstract art. The 2019 build has an industrial bohemian aesthetic and features 83 guest rooms, a Spanish restaurant, and a patio bar. The boutique hipster hotel fits in nicely on this trendy nightlife stretch of East Sixth Street. Guests can access some of the most sought-after bars and restaurants in town by foot, bike, or car. (Safe street parking can be scarce, however). The on-site Lefty's Brick Bar is a casual neighborhood bar and courtyard restaurant, and there's also a spacious rooftop patio. The staff is friendly and eager to help a younger-skewing clientele who don't mind the sparse amenities.

PROS

  • Close to the ‘truly Austin’ party scene
  • Located away from cookie-cutter downtown, yet within easy reach
  • The building’s an interesting design that art enthusiasts will appreciate

CONS

  • There are no fitness or wellness amenities
  • All rooms do not have coffee machines
  • The location can be extremely noisy as it's packed with bars

Room

Rooms are small and run up to ‘Kinda Suites’ which are still rooms with a bit more space. Entry-level ‘Studios’ are 353 sq. ft and best for soloists. They have plain white and oak decor, with olive green leather benches by cafeteria tables to tap to Marshall speakers on. Some angles are reminiscent of a tour bus. There’s a mini fridge available with snacks and beverages for purchase, but no hot drink-making facilities.

You Should Know Since there is no coffee machine or kettle in-room, staff will encourage guests to purchase a brew on-site. However, East Austin is teeming with independent coffee shops, and the street is walkable, so it’s better to get your caffeine on a stroll.

Bathroom

There’s more chance of a bathtub the higher your room category, but all bathroom areas are surprisingly light and spacious. Eco-friendly pumps of Grown Alchemist products are provided.

Lobby

It doesn’t quite feel like you’ve arrived at a hotel as check-in is unconventional. There’s no reception area or lobby, but rather you sign in at the bar and are offered a complimentary drink while waiting for a key card. Outside can be noisy, especially for those stumbling in on weekends as revelers head up to pre-game at Lefty’s Brick Bar.

Dining

Spanish restaurant Kalimotxo can be found on the ground floor, serving basque-style pintxos and tapas from Andalusia. A Spanish wine list accompanies. During the day, it’s all about the juice bar, which also sells smoothie bowls and breakfast items such as avocado toast.

Drinking

Lefty’s Brick Bar is a happening spot, with both indoor and outdoor casual seating. It’s best known for frosty cocktails to cool down from the beating heat, and pizzas and bites are available.

Tip For sweet deals, the bar has a solid happy hour every weekday 3 - 6 pm, and all day Sundays.

Room Service

The comforts of Lefty’s can be sent to your room, and it being a bar means the opening times are past midnight most days. Menu items include burgers, salads, and chicken wings.
