Longneck Manor

It’s not what you’d expect to find in Texas, but this nonprofit conservation foundation is a place where you can visit giraffes and rhinos that roam a vast fenced-in space and are extremely well tended to. The goal here is to raise awareness and funds to help wildlife conservation initiatives in Africa. Founded by a conservationist who helped design Disney’s Animal Kingdom, visitors (ages 12 and over) can also stay overnight in four villas with picture windows to maximize viewing and learn as much as they can from the animal caregivers.

Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site

It's easy to feel confused, but the LBJ State Park & Historic Site and the LBJ National Historical Park, both of which honor President Lyndon Baines Johnson, are technically separate entities that operate in conjunction with each other. Here you'll find the World War I–era Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, historic cabins and trails, and the adjacent LBJ Ranch, which includes the family cemetery, where the 36th president is buried, and the Texas White House, the home where LBJ and his wife, Lady Bird, lived before and after his presidency and often returned to during his time as the nation's leader. A self-guided tour of the ranch begins at the visitor center, and afterward you can hike the many park trails, fish the Pedernales River, picnic, and even take a dip in the pool during the summer.

Marktplatz von Fredericksburg

Located right in the center of the city, Marktplatz is a park that wraps around the Vereins Kirche Museum, an octagonal building that was the site of the first church and the first school in Fredericksburg. It boasts picnic areas, play spaces, and a winter ice skating rink and also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year.

Meierstone Vineyards

Winemaker Krystal Patel grew up making wine in the cellar with her grandmother, and turned part of her fifth-generation family ranch into a vineyard and tasting room in a former barn in Stonewall. You can taste her award-winning small-batch wines—reds are the specialty—and learn about the region's history through her fascinating family. (Her grandfather invented an "airship" in the 1860s, 40 years before the Wright brothers.) If you’re up for a bite, ask about a cheese board to accompany the wine tasting.

This nonprofit interactive museum, a really cool high-tech space housed in a refurbished 1880s mill, offers a wealth of fun—and education—for kids and grown-ups alike. Exhibitions run the gamut from Sharks to the Food Forest, deep sea robotics, a virtual body table, and so much more.

Slate Mill Wine Collective

Located just south of downtown Fredericksburg, this collaborative concept evolved from a family-operated boutique winery called 1851 Vineyards before restructuring as Slate Mill Collective. The collective expanded the vineyard, winery, and tasting room to include 35 planted acres and a state-of-the-art wine-making facility. Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum

There is a thriving hog culture in the Hill Country, and it’s not just feral hogs, either. People love to ride motorcycles here, and the Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum showcases one man's collection of vintage bikes from the 1950s to 1970s, and beyond. Owner Gordon Massie has been riding and restoring bikes for decades, and he exhibits around 100 here.
