Barnstead Inn

$$ | 349 Bonnet St., Manchester, VT, 05255, USA

This boutique inn has created its own little oasis, taking 1830s farmhouse lodging to the next level by pairing New England charm with luxury amenities. Rooms have modern comforts and special touches like the stone fireplace in the Stratton Suite or the copper soaking tub in the Hildene Suite. In the warmer months, enjoy the property's outdoor swimming pool and flower gardens. The on-site Stonewall Tavern serves craft beers and snacks such as salmon bites and charcuterie boards. In addition to the human innkeepers, the resident pups Lucky and King (both are hypoallergenic breeds) roam around the property, making sure things are up to par for the guests.

Pros

  • Soaking tubs and special touches in the rooms
  • Walking distance to the downtown area
  • Modern amenities

Cons

  • No pet-friendly rooms
  • No children under 12 (though some might find this a "pro")
  • Not a classic country inn in terms of decor

The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa

$$$ | 3567 Main St., Manchester, VT, 05254, USA

In Manchester Village, nearly all life revolves around the historic Equinox Inn, whose fame and service have carved it into the Mt. Rushmore of accommodation in Vermont. Renovations completed in July 2018 refreshed the rooms, spa, and common areas, but it's still the same, stately, elegant property as always.

Pros

  • On-site spa, fitness center, and pool
  • Excellent steakhouse on-site
  • Newly redesigned 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, extensive network of walking trails and close proximity to several major ski mountains

Cons

  • Somewhat corporate feel
  • Lines at reception can make checking in and out take long
  • Lots of weddings can sometimes overcrowd

Inn at Manchester

$$ | 3967 Main St., Manchester, VT, 05255, USA

Located between the Taconic and Green Mountains just a short distance from Manchester's main strip, this classic inn has a variety of comfortable rooms, all slightly different from the next. The Thyme room has Vermont-themed art hung on powder blue walls, while the Sage Suite has a seating area with a TV, a fireplace, and a jetted bathtub. Lovingly prepared breakfasts include Vermont Coffee Company blends, quiches, homemade granola, and the inn's famous cottage cakes (a mix of cottage cheese, eggs, melted butter, and flour baked on a pancake griddle and served with maple syrup and warm apricot jelly).

Pros

  • Pub on-site
  • Pool and fireplaces
  • Free, homemade breakfast

Cons

  • No-frill rooms

Taconic Hotel

$$$ | 3835 Main St., Manchester, VT, 05254, USA

Vermont's only Kimpton, which opened in 2015, attempts to walk the fine line between its corporate boutique design and a Vermont flavor—the latter of which is distilled, quite literally, in the Copper Grouse, the hotel's on-site enclave of seasonal plates and craft cocktails. In many aspects, it succeeds in highlighting Vermont's inherent character, with a wraparound porch, wood floors, vintage photography and prints, sleek, contemporary guest rooms decorated in subdued light browns and greens, and gas fireplaces that keep the mood bright and upbeat.

Pros

  • Yoga mats in every room
  • No additional fee for pets
  • The house restaurant, the Copper Grouse, does a good turn on American bistro cuisine, cocktails included

Cons

  • Not very Vermonty experience
  • Only chain's rewards members get free high-speed Internet/Wi-Fi
  • Tiny pool
