9 Best Hotels in Brasilia, Brasilia and the West

Background Illustration for Hotels

One thing you don’t have to worry about when choosing a hotel in Brasília is location. With the notable exception of a couple of stand-out hotels by the Palácio da Álvoráda, most of the city’s hotels are found in the hotel sectors to the south and north of the Eixo Monumental, within walking distance of all the main sights. Some of the original buildings constructed in these sectors in the 1960s are now looking a little tired, but in the run up to the World Cup, new hotels were opened and many older hotels were renovated. Prices are generally steep, but you’ll find rates discounted 50% or more from Friday to Monday, when the politicians are typically away.

Brasília Palace

$$$$ | SHTN, Trecho 01, Lt. 01, Brasília, 70800-200, Brazil Fodor's Choice

This is your chance to stay in an effortless modernist masterpiece, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, which reopened in 2006 after a top-to-bottom renovation supervised by Niemeyer himself. The first hotel built in Brasília, this simple rectangular structure exudes tranquillity and seems to shimmer in its lakeside setting. Two wall-size panels by Athos Bulcão adorn the lobby. The common areas are the epitome of 1960s chic. In 2014, the Palace hosted the Brazilian soccer team during their ill-fated World Cup campaign.

Pros

  • Inspirational, historic building
  • Great oval-shaped swimming pool

Cons

  • A little distance from the City Center

Royal Tulip Brasília Alvorada

$$$$ | SHTN Trecho 1, Cj. 1B, Bl. C, Brasília, 70800-200, Brazil

President Obama's choice when he came to Brasília in 2011, this swank hotel has a prime location next to the official residence of the president of Brazil, which has made it a firm favorite for visiting politicians and diplomats. Lesser mortals will be wowed by the dramatic lobby and the stunning setting on the edge of Paranoá Lake, although standard rooms do not come with a view and are surprisingly drab, especially given the hotel's gaudy red facade. Golden Tulip took over management in 2009, and some guests prefer the Golden Tulip Brasília Alvorada, on the same site, where rooms are brighter and less expensive.

Pros

  • Quiet location
  • Lovely lake views
  • Postmodern architecture by Ruy Ohtake

Cons

  • Hectic during conventions
  • Far from the City Center
  • Impersonal
