Liberdade

Neighborhood
SAO PAULO - JUL 30: The Japan Town in Liberdade on July 30, 2010 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Liberdade is the Japanese district, and the city has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.;
ABOUT

The red-porticoed entryway to Liberdade (which means "Freedom") is south of Praça da Sé, behind the cathedral. The neighborhood is home to many first-, second-, and third-generation Nippo-Brazilians, as well as to more recent Chinese and Korean immigrants. Clustered around Avenida Liberdade are shops with everything from imported bubble gum to miniature robots and Kabuki face paint.

The best time to visit Liberdade is on Sunday during the street fair at Praça da Liberdade, where Asian food, crafts, and souvenirs are sold. The fair is usually crowded, so keep your wits about you and do not wander around at night.
