32 Best Hotels in Johannesburg, South Africa

Background Illustration for Hotels

You can find just about every type of lodging in Johannesburg, from the stately and classic Saxon to the fun and funky Ten Bompas or the Peech. Although these varied options are all worthy places to lay your head, the truth is that most travelers stop here only for an overnight or two before they head out to their safari destination. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of places that are easy to get to from the airport and are in well-secured areas so that you will feel safe and comfortable.

Most, if not all, of the good hotels are in the northern suburbs. Many of them are linked to nearby malls and are well policed. Boutique hotels have sprung up everywhere, as have bed-and-breakfasts from Melville to Soweto. Hotels are quieter in December and January, when many locals take their annual vacations and rates are often cheaper. But beware: if there's a major conference, some of the smaller hotels can be booked months in advance.

All the hotels we list offer no-smoking rooms, and many have no-smoking floors.

De Hoek Country Hotel

$$$ | R98, Magaliesberg, 1791, South Africa Fodor's Choice

In France this exclusive establishment would be called an auberge—a five-star destination hotel with a superb restaurant suitable for an overnight or weekend jaunt—and the two-story, sandstone building along the river would not be out of place in Provence. De Hoek sits amid semi-indigenous gardens in the exquisite Magalies River valley. The quiet rooms have golden walls and dark mahogany furniture. Some of the superior suites have fireplaces, and all rooms have underfloor heating. Archery, croquet, lawn bowling, and mountain walks are some of the activities available, but the magnificent restaurant—serving classy five-course dinners and a five-course Sunday lunch (booking essential for outside visitors)—is what brings most people.

Pros

  • Magnificent spa facilities overlooking a swimming pool
  • Friendly and attentive service
  • Statues and artwork dot its bucolic setting

Cons

  • Sometimes hosts small private conferences
  • Difficult to access without a car
  • Pricey, but a value-for-money getaway

The Orient Hotel

$$$ | Crocodile River Valley, Pretoria, 1779, South Africa Fodor's Choice

This exquisite, Asian-themed boutique hotel is aimed at the discerning traveler who is looking for an unusual and memorable experience and wants to be out of the center of the Johannesburg business district. Suites are large, with equally large bathrooms that have deep soaking tubs and Oriental rugs on the marble floors. There are also shower cubicles with views over the surrounding hills and a separate toilet. All suites feature collectible objets d'art. The Constantinople suite has a 300-year-old Indian four-poster bed; others have a mix of antique and period reproduction pieces. Instead of bathrobes, you will find in your wardrobes authentic galabayas, the all-in-one caftan worn in north Africa and the Middle East. Giant carved timber doors and reflecting pools are found throughout the property. All the rooms offer views over the surrounding hills. If walks in the conservancy (zebra and eland roam freely) don't appeal to you, there's an extensive library. Mosaic restaurant has been recognized for its superlative French cuisine. There's an on-site cinema and a museum of sculptor Tienie Prichard's work.

The Palace of the Lost City

$$$$ | Sun City, South Africa Fodor's Choice

You might think a hotel based on the concept of a lost African palace would suffer from theme-park syndrome, but happily, that's not the case here as sculpted cranes and leaping kudu appear to take flight from the hotel towers, elephants guard stairways and bridges, and graceful reminders of ersatz Africa strike you at every turn. No expense has been spared, and the attention to detail is mind-boggling. All rooms have hand-carved doors and furnishings, the jungle paintings on the ceiling of the lobby's rotunda took 5,000 hours to complete, and the hand-laid mosaic floor is made up of 300,000 separate tiles. The property was renovated in 2022.

Pros

  • Luxury accommodations
  • Impeccable service
  • Great activities

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Some would find it unbearably ostentatious and a little kitsch
  • Requires a minimum booking of two nights

Sanctuary Mandela

$$$ | 4 13th Ave., Johannesburg, South Africa Fodor's Choice

Get an insider’s insight into Nelson Mandela with a stay at Sanctuary Mandela, which has converted his former Houghton home and heritage site into a boutique hotel that pays homage to the human rights activist with specially commissioned art pieces that document his lifetime. One of the boardrooms displays the foundations of his rondavel meeting room which was added to the main house, and where CODESA talks were held. The rooms are done up in a subtle yet elegant style with hints of African design, and a flash of forest green in the bathrooms. At Insights Restaurant (open to the public with bookings), you can gratify your hunger with a meal prepared by chef Xoliswa Ndoyiya, who was the former statesman’s personal chef for more than 20 years. She prepares some of his best-loved dishes like Nguni sirloin, mushroom and samp risotto, and what the family called "sweet" chicken with contemporary flair. Though it may be new, stories come to life within these walls and through retellings by the staff. Guests can opt for an exclusive private tour of the archives at the nearby Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory (run by the Nelson Mandela Foundation)—a complimentary experience that cannot be requested without a stay, though the other exhibits of this nonprofit are open to the public.

Pros

  • Medium-sized swimming pool with lounges
  • Mandela's personal items, mementoes, and photographs are throughout the hotel
  • Mandela's master bedroom has been converted into the presidential suite

54 on Bath

$$$ | 54 Bath Ave., Johannesburg, 2196, South Africa

Most of the visitors to 54 on Bath are international business travelers and foreign tourists drawn to the modern yet intimate elegance behind the towering brick facade and Doric columns, though the champagne bar is popular with locals. The upmarket restaurant, Level Four, has established itself as one of Johannesburg's culinary centers. African Pride Melrose Arch, Autograph Collection

$$$ | 1 Melrose Sq., Johannesburg, 2076, South Africa

Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, this ultramodern hotel is within Melrose Arch, a high-security gated community with good dining and shopping options within safe walking distance. The Afro-chic decor mixes modern and traditional African influences that carry through from the lobby to the rooms, all anchored by the beautiful baobab tree. The rooms are well equipped, and each has a view of the pool and garden or overlooks a square. The pool area highlights the eccentric and modern taste that is echoed throughout the hotel, with trees planted in larger-than-life steel buckets, and tables and chairs set out in a few inches of water. There are two on-site restaurants: Aduna offers all-day dining while Sebule offers a grillhouse experience for lunch and dinner.

Pros

  • Part of Melrose Arch, a gated shopping, dining, and residential enclave
  • Airport shuttle to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB)
  • Two on-site restaurants

Cons

Bakubung Bush Lodge

$$$$ | Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa

Abutting Pilanesberg, this lodge sits at the head of a long valley with terrific views of a hippo pool that forms the lodge's central attraction—it's not unusual to have hippos grazing 100 feet from the terrace restaurant. Despite this, the lodge never really succeeds in creating a bush feel, perhaps because it's such a big convention and family destination. Its brick buildings feel vaguely institutional. Nevertheless, the guest rooms, particularly the executive studios, are very pleasant, thanks to light pine furniture, colorful African bedspreads, and super views of the valley. The lodge conducts game drives in open-air vehicles, as well as ranger-guided walks. A shuttle bus (R110 round-trip, booking required) runs to Sun City, 10 km (6 miles) away.

Pros

  • Malaria-free
  • Short drive to a big dam that attracts abundant game and birds
  • Cheerful atmosphere

Cons

  • Close to a main gate
  • Always crowded

Budmarsh Country Lodge

$$ | Magalies Meander Rd., Magaliesberg, 1791, South Africa

Surrounded by a lush garden in the heart of the Magaliesberg, this lodge has rooms with beautiful antique furniture and is a good place to base yourself if you just want to get into the country for a river ramble or a mountain hike—even the drive is scenic. Even if you don't stay overnight, drive through for a delightful gourmet picnic (24-hour advance bookings required) beneath the shade of the trees, along the edge of the small stocked dam, or try your hand at catch-and-release fishing.

Forum Homini

$$$$ | R540 (off N14), Mogale City, 1732, South Africa

This boutique hotel in a game estate within the Cradle of Humankind aptly alludes to the mysterious and fascinating story of the development of humanity in every bit of its decor and can be a good option if you want to spend some time outside but near Johannesburg. Artwork of bygone years adorn the walls and the modern architecture takes into account the landscape. The windows have sweeping views and natural veld (pronounced felt)—long, African grasses—grows on the rooftops. Guests can visit the nearby Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng Visitor Centre for an additional cost. The superb fine-dining restaurant, Roots, specializes in contemporary cooking with a South African influence, but only serves breakfast and dinners, with the exception of a four-course, wine-paired lunch on Sunday. The rooftop bar and terrace, where you'll find the swimming pool (and the gym on the same level), is a firm favorite among locals who come here for a sundowner and a bite to eat. Reef Hotel

$ | 56 Anderson Rd., Johannesburg, South Africa

Occupying a former office building, this chic-industrial style hotel commemorates Jo'burg's early beginnings as a gold-mining town with touches like a big black-and-white photo of a gold mine over the headboard in each well-appointed room. Elevate, the open-air rooftop bar on the 16th floor, offers spectacular 360-degree views of the old business district, and there's a hot tub (sadly it's not heated) that is accessible to all guests on the sun deck on the third floor. A shuttle service is available for transport to local sites for a fee (free less than 5 km [3 miles]).

Pros

  • The restaurant was refurbished in 2021
  • Great breakfast buffet
  • Open-air rooftop bar on 16th floor open Thursday through Sunday

Cons

  • Very slow response on email—better to call
  • Doorless, walk-in bathrooms
  • Noise from downtown
