Macau 2049
From Zhang Yimou, director of the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, comes MGM Cotai’s spectacular eight-part show. Macau 2049 unites world-class talent to imagine ancient, regional, and largely unseen Chinese traditions in a futuristic world. Think high-flying acrobatics, cultural dances, and musical performances with high-tech visual displays. The show is breathtaking, but it can also be kitschy. Between acts, performers take a bow to prompted applause as prerecorded scripts detail everything from the history of Miao folk singing to the payload capacity of the robotic arms used on stage. Don’t expect it to have anything to do with Macau or the year its status as a special administrative region will end, either. Just sit back and enjoy.
