4 Best Hotels in Auckland, New Zealand

Background Illustration for Hotels

As New Zealand's gateway city, Auckland has most of the large international chain hotels, as well as plenty of comfortable bed-and-breakfasts, mom-and-pop motels, and other individually owned places. Many of the large brand-name hotels cluster around the central business district (CBD), whereas B&Bs tend to congregate in trendier neighborhoods. Many of the best are in suburbs close to the city center like Devonport and Ponsonby. You'll find your hosts quite chatty and keen to recommend local sights but equally happy to offer you privacy.

November to March are the busiest months for Auckland hotels, so it pays to book by August to ensure you get your first choice. All the major hotels have parking at a price. A number of the B&Bs offer parking, an especially useful perk since they're usually in narrow city center streets. Better yet, B&Bs generally don't charge for parking. Wi-Fi access is standard in hotels and B&Bs, and a computer is almost always available if you didn't bring your own device. B&B owners offer insider knowledge on what's best close by, and many will make reservations or other arrangements for you. Only the hotels tend to have air-conditioning, but this isn't a problem when you can fling open the windows and let in the fresh air.

The Convent Hotel

$$ | 454 Great North Rd., Auckland, 1021, New Zealand Fodor's Choice

You don't have to be religious to stay at this boutique hotel in a former Catholic Convent, where the creators have faith in the building and have given it a new, designer-style life. In keeping with its past, the rooms have names with a religious reference such as The Sacristy, The Convent Superior, Convent Petite, and Mother Superior. Amenities include luxurious linens and complimentary snacks, and the hotel also has Ada, an Italian restaurant. It's steps away from Grey Lynn, a trendy suburb with an easy, low-key vibe.

  • Colorful, stylish furnishings and finishes add character
  • Prioximity to cafés and restaurants

Esplanade Hotel

$$ | 1 Victoria Rd., Devonport, 0624, New Zealand

Commanding the corner opposite the pier, this turn-of-the-20th-century Edwardian baroque-revival hotel is the first thing you see when approaching Devonport by ferry. (And it's advisable to get here by ferry, as the traffic into Devonport can be bumper-to-bumper, especially when the trendy suburb is hosting a music or food festival.) Upstairs, a wide corridor lighted by chandeliers leads to generous rooms with period furnishings and long drapes hanging from the tall windows. Harbor views come at a slightly higher rate. The elegant two-bedroom, two-bathroom Penthouse Suite is ideal for families (at around twice the standard rate).

Pros

  • Stunning views
  • Charming decor
  • Good restaurant

Cons

  • Poor parking lot
  • Some rooms could use a refresh
  • Outside environment can be busy and noisy
