The Best Hotel in Otago, Invercargill, and Stewart Island, New Zealand

Background Illustration for Hotels

Dunedin has a full range of accommodations, from modest hostels to luxury hotels, while Invercargill has more motels than anything else. Local motels generally provide clean rooms with kitchens and TVs. Stewart Island lodging options include camping, hostels, rental houses, hotels, motels, and boutique B&Bs. Throughout the region air-conditioning is a rarity, but given the temperate climate, this isn't a problem. Heating, on the other hand, is standard in most places.

It's a good idea to make reservations, especially in summer. In Dunedin, rooms can be scarce around special events, such as graduation ceremonies and high-profile rugby games.

Clean, spacious, and comfortable apartment-like units and full apartments have decks with views that take in Halfmoon Bay, and from these "busybody" perches you can observe the comings and goings of the wharf and pub, as well as the antics of the kakas (bush parrots). The studio spa with a two-person jetted tub is nice after a day of tramping. All rooms have central heating and Wi-Fi; some are wheelchair-accessible. Other facilities include laundry, barbecues, and freezer storage (in case you've been out fishing and need to store your catch). There's a free shuttle service to the national park.

Pros

  • Central location
  • All units have cooking facilities
  • Thoughtful amenities including barbecues and a national park shuttle

Cons

  • A slight walk uphill from town
  • Modern and comfortable but not for those who require luxury
  • Some restrictions on what can be cooked in kitchens
