2 Best Hotels in Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Background Illustration for Hotels

Like mellow places around the world, you'll find plenty of comfortable bed-and-breakfasts and stylish motels, but both Coromandel and Bay of Plenty also have a sprinkling of luxe boutique lodges tucked away in the forest or along coastal coves. In peak season, from October through March, advance booking is essential across the board and many of the better places have long-term customers who book as much as a year in advance.

Crow's Nest Apartments

$$ | 18 Mill Rd., Whitianga, 3510, New Zealand

While this three-level apartment-style accommodation bears little resemblance to a ship's lookout, it does provide a handy and comfortable base from which to explore the area. Apartments have decks (balconies) and large windows facing out to the ocean, and the furnishings are modern but fairly standard (the color white dominates). However, this is ideal if you are spending a few days in town, due to each unit having its own kitchen, microwave, and dishwasher. There are also larger units for families. If you're not preparing your own dinner, Whitianga's restaurants are a short stroll away.

Pros

  • 20 meters (22 yards) from beach
  • Friendly owners with local knowledge
  • Covered parking on-site

Cons

  • Not all rooms have beach and ocean views
  • Can be noisy because of late night revelers from town
  • Some rooms can be too bright at night due to proximity to security lights
