8 Best Hotels in The Southern Alps and Fiordland, New Zealand

Background Illustration for Hotels

Lodgings in the Southern Alps and Fiordland milk the fantastic views for all they're worth. You can almost always find a room that looks out on a lake, river, or rugged mountain range. Queenstown and Wanaka are busy in summer (January through March) and winter (July through September), so you should reserve in advance. Luxury options are plentiful in Queenstown, and costs are correspondingly high. Other towns, such as Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, have extremely limited options, so you should plan ahead there, too. Air-conditioning is rare because it's rarely needed. Heating, though, is standard, and essential in winter.

Aoraki Alpine Lodge

$$$ | 101 Bowen Dr., Aoraki Mount Cook, 7946, New Zealand

This lodge, run by a young local family, has twin, triple, and family rooms, all with private bathrooms and two have kitchenettes. All rooms have mountain views (though not necessarily of Aoraki/Mount Cook). The basic alpine-style decoration uses lots of native timber and glass, and there's a huge stone fireplace in the lounge. There are shared kitchen facilities, a laundry, bicycles you can rent, and a small shop.

  • Nice views from rooms
  • Bikes for rent

Cons

  • Not many meal options, so be prepared to buy groceries and cook

Aoraki Court Motel

$$$ | 26 Bowen Dr., Aoraki Mount Cook, 7946, New Zealand

Being fully self-catering is a huge plus with the lack of shopping in Mount Cook Village, and Aoraki Court Motel has 25 modern studio or two-bedroom units, all of which have kitchenettes. While Aoraki/Mount Cook itself isn't visible from here, you get spectacular views of Mt. Sefton and the surrounding mountains, and you may get mugged by the cheeky paradise ducks trying to break into your room. Buy groceries at Twizel or Lake Tekapo before you arrive, or dine at the Hermitage Hotel farther down the road.

Pros

  • Removed from the hordes of bus groups
  • Great walks right out the door
  • Option to cook your own meals

Cons

  • Free Wi-Fi is patchy due to the remote location
  • Expensive for what you get
  • Books up months in advance
