2 Best Hotels in Central Cuba, Cuba

Background Illustration for Hotels

You'll find massive, modern beach resorts here whose guests virtually all arrive on resort packages. (The region is home to Cuba's largest hotel, with 1,100-plus rooms.) Also on the spectrum are historic city-center hotels, with doubles in a budget-pleasing CUC$50 range. The downside is that sheer numbers of city hotels are small. Towns such as Trinidad, Camagüey, and Cienfuegos have only a few quality places to stay. Lodging in casas particulares runs CUC$15 to CUC$25, depending on the season. The facilities vary accordingly, but even the casas particulares have private baths, air-conditioning, hot water, and in-room phones.

Credit cards are accepted in all government restaurants and hotels, but you pay cash in private accommodations.

Iberostar Ensenachos

$$$$ | Cuba Fodor's Choice

Located on a small island adjacent to Cayo Coco, this is the most upscale and private of the area's resorts. Lobby features Italian marble floors and original contemporary and classical paintings. The registration desk is a closed, air-conditioned portico; even the bar here is air-conditioned, a luxury that very few resorts offer. Harmless iguanas roam the property, and the winding landscape is beautifully manicured. The resort has four à la carte restaurants and one buffet. A full-service spa offers a host of massages, thermal pools, Turkish baths, and a hair salon. Service here is the key, and a staff member is assigned to each bungalow complex to answer to the personal needs of guests. The Royal Suite villas are set apart from the rest of the resort and have their own private fine-dining restaurant.

Pros

  • The rooms here are superb, meeting international standards
  • More luxurious than competing hotels

Cons

  • Subdued atmosphere, which may or may not be what you want in a resort stay

Meliá Jardines del Rey

$$$$ | Cuba Fodor's Choice
Cuba's largest hotel clocks in at an astounding 1,176 rooms, and, if you like large resorts with lots of activity, it'll work for you. This 2015 entry into the Cayo Coco sweepstakes sparkles and gleams with all the freshness of a brand-new hotel. Rooms scatter over the property in three-story bungalows with double beds, gleaming tile floors, and bright tropical colors. Only about 10% of the rooms here are designated as "sea view," but outside your door, you're never far from the ocean. With nine restaurants, you'll never go hungry, although keep in mind that some are included in your rate and others are à la carte.

Pros
