2 Best Places to Shop in Split, Central Dalmatia

Dalmatian women—and those from Split in particular—are renowned for their sense of style. Despite a poor local economy, you'll find a good number of exclusive boutiques selling original women's clothes, jewelry, and housewares, not to mention numerous shoe and dress shops with goods imported from Italy. Art galleries throughout the region will often feature some unique handmade products that are not able to be found elsewhere because of the difficulty local artists and crafters have in distributing their work. The city's most memorable shopping venue remains the pijaca, the colorful open-air market held each morning just outside the palace walls, where you can find everything from lavender and Bra? stone souvenirs to purses and dresses, fresh vegetables and Dalmatian delicacies. Dalmatia is known for producing some of the country’s best wine, olive oil, and pršut (prosciutto), all of which can be found in the market in Split.

Souvenir seekers beeline to the basements of Diocletian’s Palace, full of stands selling jewelry, wood carvings, and other creative artisan handicrafts. Don’t miss the expansive Pazar, also known as the City Marketplace or the Gradska tržnica, which sells everything from vegetables to clothes. The portion that stretches across Hrvojeva Street all along the eastern wall of Diocletian’s Palace is known as Hrvojeva Street Market. Split’s fish market (Ribarnica) on pedestrian Marmontova Street is also known as one of the best in the country.
