The Hoxton, Charlottenburg

Germany’s first Hoxton hotel brings a fun, playful vibe inspired by 1920s Art Nouveau style to West Berlin, with a mix of custom-made and vintage furnishings, a sceney lobby perfect for co-working, and an Indian restaurant and teahouse. Wilmina Hotel

$$ | Kantstr. 79, Berlin, 10627, Germany Fodor's Choice

This former women’s prison has been completely transformed into a minimalist boutique hotel surrounded by gorgeous wild gardens, with many guest rooms created from prison cells, a wonderful modern German restaurant and bar, and a rooftop pool and sauna. The hotel buildings, which date from 1896, housed prisoners until 1985; the structure stayed shuttered until the hotel opened in 2022. Guest rooms, with white walls and wood furnishings, range from cozy to classic to penthouse suites, some created by combining old prison cells and some newly built; all feature super-comfy COCO-MAT beds. Lovis Restaurant offers creative vegetarian-forward cuisine, and Lovis Bar creates interesting cocktails with a savory twist. Go for a dip year-round in the rooftop pool before warming up in the sauna (by reservation only); there’s also a small gym open 24 hours.

Pros

  • Romantic, moody atmosphere
  • Delicious destination restaurant
  • Relatively affordable rates

Cons

  • Far west location is off-the-beaten-path
  • No minibar or coffee makers in most rooms (just kettle and tea), but there is a 24-hour honesty bar
  • No A/C in "cozy" and "classic" guest rooms

Hotel am Steinplatz

$$ | Am Steinplatz 4, Berlin, 10623, Germany
Set in a turn-of-the-century grand city mansion just a few steps away from Ku'damm, this luxurious boutique hotel defies its operator, the Marriott group, in many ways. Opened in late 2013, the Hotel am Steinplatz offers typical Charlottenburg, art nouveau rooms with high ceilings and a minimalist design but all the services of a four-star hotel such as free Wi-Fi, a well-stocked minibar, plush robes and slippers, as well as products by ETRO. Pros

  • A lot of high-standard service for the price
  • Centrally located yet very quiet

Cons

  • Despite historic setting, hotel has a business-style atmosphere

InterContinental Berlin

$$ | Budapester Str. 2, Berlin, 10787, Germany

From the heavily trafficked street, the huge "InterConti," the epitome of old West Berlin, evokes the Louvre with its glass pyramid entrance. In the rooms, modern gray, black, and beige furnishings are offset by pops of color and a rotating wall unit that allows you to watch TV while soaking in a tub. The Club rooms on the seventh and eighth floors have a private check-in area, and come with their own lounge, meeting rooms, and other extras. The spa's saunas and the 14th-floor restaurant, Hugo's, are incentives to stick around the hotel.

Pros

  • Large rooms with great views
  • Friendly and impeccable service
  • Great Michelin-starred restaurant Hugo's and bar Marlene on-site

Cons

  • Street is not inviting
  • Huge hotel lacks atmosphere and can feel businesslike
  • Room design somewhat bland
