Sopronbánfalvi Kolostor

$$ | Kolostorhegy utca 11, 9400, Hungary Fodor's Choice

If you're looking for a memorable stay in Sopron, look no further than this extraordinary 12th-century monastery-turned-hotel. The bedrooms, many of which are old monk's cells but have now been elegantly refurbished as simple but stylish en-suite rooms, are spread across the old cloister of the monastery, with views either of the central courtyard, the beautiful garden, or the forest around. To help promote the meditative atmosphere, there are no TVs in the rooms (though there is Wi-Fi), as well as no minibar and no room service. The hotel's gorgeous vaulted and frescoed Refektórium restaurant serves delicious, beautifully presented meals every evening for hotel guests (book half board for the best deal), and even the conference room is worth a visit for its historic wood-beamed ceiling. Ask at reception for the key to the monastery church, and visit in the morning to see its beautiful frescoes and carved pulpit illuminated in the early light.

Pros

  • This is a truly one-of-a-kind stay
  • An audio guide introduces the property
  • Refektórium restaurant is one of Sopron's finest

Cons

  • Some rooms have single beds
  • Hotel services are limited
  • A 40-minute walk (or 10-minute taxi) from the center

Casati Budapest Hotel

$$ | Paulay Ede utca 31, Budapest, 1061, Hungary

Much about this boutique hotel is small---the sauna, the fitness room, the adjoining cocktail bar Tuk Tuk, and the hotel's carbon footprint---but it's big where it counts, on style, service, and comfort. Just off the Jewish District's most bustling streets, the Casati is still in the middle of the action but with a slightly more low-key atmosphere. A green hotel, you'll find LED lighting, eco-friendly detergents, and recycled toilet paper. Public spaces are bright and colorful while rooms are decorated in either muted, neutral schemes or richer, deeper colors.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Charming cocktail bar part of hotel
  • Spacious rooms

Cons

  • No restaurant
  • Located on a crowded side street
  • No guests under 14 years

Eurostars Palazzo Zichy

$$ | Lőrinc Pap tér 2, Budapest, 1088, Hungary

For an elegant and chic hotel stay, with flavors of old and modern Budapest, it is hard to beat this boutique conversion of the former palace of Hungarian Count Nándor Zichy. Recently taken over by the Eurostars group, there is no shortage of old-world charm to be found in the renovated 19th-century building in District 8, right down the street from some of the city's hippest new cafés. Comfortable rooms and spacious common areas characterize the Zichy. A good complimentary breakfast also gets high marks in a city where breakfast is the least fussed-over meal of the day.

Pros

  • Attentive service staff
  • Impressive gym and sauna

Cons

  • Smallish rooms
