Why We Like It

Monti is one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city, full of vintage shops and artisan boutiques, but it has never had a great place to stay—until now. Thanks to the whimsical design, the great restaurant and rooftop bar, and the airy spa, Casa Monti feels rooted in the neighborhood. Ask the staff about their favorite places nearby—they seem to genuinely love the area and want to help guests discover it.

Fodor's Expert Review

Monti's first true luxury boutique hotel is a tribute to the artists and craftsmen that populate the neighborhood, with a whimsical design full of nods to ancient Rome. Rooms and suites feature colorful prints on the headboards, curtains, and walls, as well as bespoke furniture, Nespresso machines, and hand-painted espresso cups. A breakfast buffet with high-quality products is set up in the ground-floor restaurant, which serves excellent Roman and Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner, while the rooftop bar is a charming spot for creative cocktails. The sunny yellow spa has a Jacuzzi and treatments using Susanne Kaufmann's holistic skincare line.

You Should Know This hotel is ideal for savvy travelers who want an alternative to Rome’s more traditional five-star hotels. If you’re dreaming of classic luxury with all the bells and whistles, this might not be the place for you.

Room

The 36 rooms and suites are full of personality, with prints featuring birds or leaves splashed across the headboards and wallpaper (there are four different patterns). Furnishings, including the bedside tables and lighting, were custom designed by Gonzalez and there are nice touches like hand-painted espresso cups to use with the Nespresso machines.

Bathroom

The bathrooms combine red tiles and veined marble. Spacious rainfall showers are stocked with full-size bottles of body wash, shampoo, and conditioner by Susanne Kaufmann.

Lobby

Wallpaper depicting Rome’s iconic umbrella pines, seating upholstered with zig-zag patterned fabric, and shelves displaying art books and ceramic vases are the first clue that this hotel was designed with an artsy, bohemian aesthetic in mind. While the space is meant more for passing through than hanging out, there’s seating available if you’re waiting for your room to be ready or having a chat with the concierge.

Tip The hotel’s concierge team can organize tours in vintage Fiat 500s (like the one parked outside the hotel) or Vespas and are happy to offer suggestions for non-touristy things to do in the area.

Pool

There’s a Jacuzzi in the rooftop spa that’s just big enough for three or four people.

Spa

The rooftop spa feels like a vintage 1960s aerie with sunny yellow tiles and chintzy floral fabrics. Treatments feature products by the holistic German skincare line Susanne Kaufmann.

Gym

There’s no gym on-site, but passes are available for a fitness center nearby.

Dining

The ground-floor Casa Monti Restaurant offers all-day dining, starting with a breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, cheeses, and pastries in the morning. For lunch and dinner, the menu features lighter takes on traditional Italian dishes, like a baked eggplant parmigiana and stuffed zucchini blossoms that are served raw rather than fried.

Drinking

The rooftop bar has both indoor and outdoor seating, making it one of the few rooftop bars in Rome that can be enjoyed even in bad weather. The bartenders have created some very unique and delicious cocktails, like La Fioraia, made with gin infused with mountain flowers, raspberry shrub, and lemon juice.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is located on a sloping cobblestone street in Monti, one of Rome’s most charming neighborhoods, just a 15-minute walk from the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. The Spanish Steps are a 20-minute walk away, but if you prefer to take the metro, the Cavour stop is a 7-minute walk away. There are buses that will get you closer to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona (about a 30-minute walk away), but it might be easier to take a taxi.

Restaurants

La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali (a 7-minute walk) is a family-run restaurant that serves some special twists on Roman classics, like carbonara vignarola (carbonara pasta with fava beans, peas, and artichokes). For a quick bite, stop by Zia Rosetta (a 6-minute walk) for gourmet sandwiches on buns called rosetta or grab a gelato at Fatamorgana (a 4-minute walk), which makes exotic flavors like matcha.

Bars

: Just down the cobblestone street (a 3-minute walk) is Ai Tre Scalini, a charming wine bar with a handful of tables outside under ivy tendrils draped between the buildings. Drink Kong (a 10-minute walk) is Irish-Italian bartender Patrick Pistolesi’s Tokyo-inspired cocktail den, while Blackmarket Hall (a 2-minute walk) is a speakeasy-inspired underground bar with mismatched vintage furniture, creative cocktails, and burgers.
