Why We Like It

Typically, the city’s more affordable hotels are relegated to the area around Termini Station or more off-the-beaten path neighborhoods, but the CitizenM is right across the river from one of the city’s most happening ‘hoods. Its vibrant lobby has a great set up for co-working and if you just need a break, you can head up to the rooftop, which is accessible exclusively to hotel guests.

Fodor's Expert Review

A cheerful hotel with irreverent art that overlooks Tiber Island, citizenM’s first Italian property has a young sensibility and is located close to Rome’s most ancient attractions. The modern rooms aren't exactly spacious, but they are smartly designed, comfortable, and ring in at reasonable rates while still offering a few frills like iPad controls and rainfall showers.

You Should Know This hotel is great for young travelers who don’t plan to spend much time in their rooms; it may not be the right choice for families with kids.

PROS

  • Great location with easy access to Trastevere
  • Tasty breakfast with specialty coffee
  • Intimate rooftop terrace

CONS

  • Limited menu that’s heavy on bar food
  • Tight space requires creative room layouts
  • Soundproofed but set on the busy Lungotevere artery with lots of traffic outside

Room

The moniker ‘micro-hotel’ stems from the petit room size, so don’t expect lots of space to spread out. King-size beds are nestled into the corner, so if you’re sharing a bed, one of you might have to climb over the other to reach the bathroom. The hotel makes up for the size with clever storage solutions and high-tech touches, like tablets that control the lights, blinds, and TV; Chromecast streaming; and colored mood lights.

Bathroom

What the bathrooms lack in space they make up for with rainfall showers, extra soft towels, and full-size hairdryers.

Lobby

The lobby is a riot of color and patterns, with pop art-style ceiling murals, glossy photographs, and modern furniture in saturated hues of red, blue, and yellow. Plants, art books, and cheeky design details like a polka dotted vase by Toiletpaper, the creative studio of artists Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, add whimsy to the space. Just to the left of the entrance is a series of computers for self-check in.

Tip Super high-speed Wi-Fi and plenty of seating in the lobby make it great for co-working.

Gym

There’s no gym, but there are workout videos available to stream in-room and the hotel’s city guides have running maps.

Dining

At the CitizenM Canteen in the lobby lounge, the breakfast buffet comes with hot and cold items like eggs and pastries. For lunch and dinner, sandwiches, salads, pizza, and internationally inspired snacks are available to order at the bar. After hours, you can grab cold food, coffee, and other drinks from the convenience store-style fridge.

Drinking

The rooftop bar is open only for hotel guests and has self-service wine and beer taps. You simply put your room key into the machine (there’s one for beer and cocktails and another for wine), grab a glass, and pour your drink. The charge will automatically appear on your bill at check-out.

Getting Around

This part of Rome isn’t serviced by the metro, so taxis and buses are your best bet. Luckily, you’re in easy walking distance of many of Rome’s main sights, including Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and Campo de’ Fiori.

Restaurants

Across the river in Trastevere, Da Enzo al 29 (a 10-minute walk) is a quintessential Roman trattoria with tables packed tightly together, a convivial vibe, and excellent carbonara. For a more upscale experience, Glass Hostaria (a 10-minute walk) showcases creative cooking by Christina Bowerman. Pianostrada (an 8-minute walk) has a bit of a cult following for its shabby chic décor and superlative bistro cuisine. Pizzeria Ai Marmi (a 7-minute walk) slings thin Roman-style pizzas in a space that looks like it hasn’t changed in 50 years.

Bars

Set in a former autobody garage, Freni e Frizioni (an 8-minute walk away) is one of the city’s most popular cocktail bars, while the Jerry Thomas Project (a 16-minute walk) is inspired by New York speakeasies. Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà (a 10-minute walk) is Rome’s pioneering craft beer pub.
