FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Set amid a vast olive grove, this tranquil rural retreat feels as if it's in the middle of nowhere yet is just a 20-minute drive from the UNESCO-listed temples of Agrigento. Rooms combine contemporary minimalism with original details (exposed sandstone walls, tiled floors, wooden beams) while the reception rooms in the main house—warmed by open fires in winter—have the feel of a refined aristocratic home, with old photographs, original stone floors, original paintings, intriguing sculptures, and a collection of rural curios. There is also a gorgeous pool, and the owner, Silvia, hosts cooking lessons and olive oil tastings. In autumn, you can take part in the olive harvest. The dining offerings include breakfast, homemade cakes, seasonal fruits, and simple lunches of home-baked bread, salads, and local cheeses. The restaurant serves a four-course dinner (whose menu changes every day) in the evenings. In good weather, you can eat outside on the romantically lit cobbled terrace.

Pros

  • Peaceful and rural
  • Romantic swimming pool
  • Cooking classes and olive oil tastings with owner

Cons

  • No room service
  • Might be too off the beaten track for some
  • Car is essential

Fontes Episcopi

$$ | Contrada Fontes Episcopi, Agrigento, Italy Fodor's Choice

This country mansion, once the home of a local bishop, is full of art and warm Sicilian hospitality, having been transformed into the kind of easy, informal place where guests are put instantly at their ease, as if they were old family friends. The food is hearty and fantastic, most of it grown on their organic farm, and is created in a vibrant, cozy family kitchen with wood-burning oven—and it is here that guests can have cooking lessons with the indominable chef, Maddalena; other tours can be arranged on-site. Accommodation is simple and comfortable, and there is a lovely garden and swimming pool.

Pros

  • Genuine country family atmosphere
  • Hands-on cooking lessons
  • Lovely garden and pool

Cons

  • The Macalube nature reserve (with its erupting mud volcanoes) next to the hotel is permanently closed following an accident
  • Quite remote---car essential
  • Nearest town is 10 minutes away

La Pagliera

$$ | Via Afrodite 6, Agrigento, 92100, Italy Fodor's Choice

In the rural outskirts of Agrigento sits this charming country home that has been converted into a lovely guesthouse. Owners Francesco and Susi remodeled this early 20th-century home into a modern cottage with a state-of-the-art kitchen, where they make a delicious breakfast buffet featuring the delicacies of the region, including fresh bread made with locally sourced semolina flour, handmade pistachio paste, and platters with cheeses and cured meats from neighboring vendors. The guesthouse only has two rooms, both with a view of the Valley of the Temples; there's a full kitchen where Francesco often hosts cooking lessons, or guests can request a dinner made by the owners.

Pros

  • Modern rooms
  • Great views of Valley of the Temples
  • Fantastic breakfast buffet

Cons

  • Only two rooms
  • Not much to do within walking distance
  • No pool

Villa Athena

$$$ | Via Passeggiata Archeologica 33, Agrigento, 92100, Italy Fodor's Choice

The 18th-century Villa Athena, updated into a sleek, luxurious place to stay, complete with gorgeous manicured gardens and swimming pool, holds a privileged position directly overlooking the Temple of Concordia, a 10-minute walk away—an amazing sight both during the day and when it's lit up at night. Although the hotel's bar and lobby area are on the small side, the whitewashed guest rooms have either pretty blue-tile or polished wood floors, and many feature a balcony or terrace; just make sure to request a room with a temple view, since some overlook the parking lot instead. The amenities are top-notch, too: the well-regarded restaurant serves up a bountiful breakfast buffet, and the spa is a lovely place to unwind after a day hiking around the temples.

Pros

  • Unbeatable views, and the only hotel within walking distance of the Valle dei Templi
  • Good restaurant and spa
  • Plenty of free parking

Cons

  • Lobby on the small side
  • Expensive compared to other area options
  • Lack of information on other local attractions

Doric Bed Boutique Hotel

$$ | San Biagio 20, Agrigento, 92100, Italy

Ideal for sophisticated urbanites who want to combine a poolside holiday with sightseeing, this stylish, contemporary,  hilltop hotel is an innovative addition to Agrigento’s lodging scene. It's the kind of place you can sit in your own hot tub or plunge pool in complete privacy, sipping a cocktail as the sun sets over the distant temple of Juno. Some rooms even have their own hot tubs, with all water heated by solar power. The main pool has a bar incorporated within it with stools designed to keep guests up to their waists in the water. Rooms are white and feature metal four-poster beds and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The owner is committed to sustainable tourism: the hotel is self-sufficient in energy and has its own vegetable garden and almond and pistachio groves.

Pros

  • Homegrown produce served in the restaurant
  • Some rooms have private plunge pools and hot tubs

Cons

Foresteria Baglio della Luna

$$ | Via Serafino Amabile Guastella 1, Agrigento, 92100, Italy

In the valley below the temples, fiery sunsets and moonlight cast a glow over the ancient 12th-century watchtower at the center of this farmhouse-hotel complex, which is composed of stone buildings surrounding a peaceful geranium- and ivy-filled courtyard and the garden beyond. Standard rooms, some with temple views, are simple but charming, with antique furniture and modern bathrooms. The restaurant, Accademia del Buon Gusto, serves tasty foodie fare in a beautiful setting overlooking the temples. The hotel is on an unmarked dirt road about 3 km (2 miles) southeast of the old town.

Pros

  • Quiet setting
  • Pretty gardens
  • Top-notch restaurant
