FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Set amid a vast olive grove, this tranquil rural retreat feels as if it's in the middle of nowhere yet is just a 20-minute drive from the UNESCO-listed temples of Agrigento. Rooms combine contemporary minimalism with original details (exposed sandstone walls, tiled floors, wooden beams) while the reception rooms in the main house—warmed by open fires in winter—have the feel of a refined aristocratic home, with old photographs, original stone floors, original paintings, intriguing sculptures, and a collection of rural curios. There is also a gorgeous pool, and the owner, Silvia, hosts cooking lessons and olive oil tastings. In autumn, you can take part in the olive harvest. The dining offerings include breakfast, homemade cakes, seasonal fruits, and simple lunches of home-baked bread, salads, and local cheeses. The restaurant serves a four-course dinner (whose menu changes every day) in the evenings. In good weather, you can eat outside on the romantically lit cobbled terrace.

Pros

  • Peaceful and rural
  • Romantic swimming pool
  • Cooking classes and olive oil tastings with owner

Cons

  • No room service
  • Might be too off the beaten track for some
  • Car is essential

Villa Athena

$$$ | Via Passeggiata Archeologica 33, Agrigento, 92100, Italy Fodor's Choice

The 18th-century Villa Athena, updated into a sleek, luxurious place to stay, complete with gorgeous manicured gardens and swimming pool, holds a privileged position directly overlooking the Temple of Concordia, a 10-minute walk away—an amazing sight both during the day and when it's lit up at night. Although the hotel's bar and lobby area are on the small side, the whitewashed guest rooms have either pretty blue-tile or polished wood floors, and many feature a balcony or terrace; just make sure to request a room with a temple view, since some overlook the parking lot instead. The amenities are top-notch, too: the well-regarded restaurant serves up a bountiful breakfast buffet, and the spa is a lovely place to unwind after a day hiking around the temples.

Pros

  • Unbeatable views, and the only hotel within walking distance of the Valle dei Templi
  • Good restaurant and spa
  • Plenty of free parking

Cons

  • Lobby on the small side
  • Expensive compared to other area options
  • Lack of information on other local attractions

Foresteria Baglio della Luna

$$ | Via Serafino Amabile Guastella 1, Agrigento, 92100, Italy

In the valley below the temples, fiery sunsets and moonlight cast a glow over the ancient 12th-century watchtower at the center of this farmhouse-hotel complex, which is composed of stone buildings surrounding a peaceful geranium- and ivy-filled courtyard and the garden beyond. Standard rooms, some with temple views, are simple but charming, with antique furniture and modern bathrooms. The restaurant, Accademia del Buon Gusto, serves tasty foodie fare in a beautiful setting overlooking the temples. The hotel is on an unmarked dirt road about 3 km (2 miles) southeast of the old town.

Pros

  • Quiet setting
  • Pretty gardens
  • Top-notch restaurant

Cons

  • Hotel a little dark inside
  • No pool
  • Location a bit remote
