Porto Empedocle
The birthplace of writer Andrea Camilleri, who wrote the incredibly popular Inspector Montalbano series that became an equally popular television series, Porto Empedocle is a salty old port that will appeal mainly to fans of the best-selling detective novels (the TV series was filmed in the far more glamorous and scenographic Baroque towns of the Val di Noto). Porto Empedocle is fictionalized in the books as the town of Vigatà, but certain locations were clearly recognizable, from crime scenes to the beachside home and favorite restaurant of Montalbano.
