8 Best Hotels in Museum District, Amsterdam

Background Illustration for Hotels

If you've come to Amsterdam to enjoy the arts, then you should book a room in this quarter, home to all the city's top museums. Also here is the city’s most exclusive shopping strip, while the lovely green Vondelpark is just to the west. Little wonder that this area has been colonized by a large selection of mid-range hotels, with a couple of luxe and budget options thrown into the mix.

Conservatorium Hotel

$$$$ | Paulus Potterstraat 50, 1071 DB, Netherlands Fodor's Choice

Located across the street from the Stedelijk Museum—the surrounding area chockablock with scenic parks, super-deluxe shops, restaurants and concert halls, and tram lines giving quick access into the city center—the Conservatorium is a convenient retreat for travelers looking for a stay with style. The distinctive property repurposes a former music conservatory, framing the structure with a soaring glass-and-steel atrium that houses the hotel's centerpiece lobby lounge and brasserie. Italian architect and interior designer Piero Lissoni is behind the stunning design; he infused the decor with unexpected splashes of color, but the overall impression is sleek and modern. Rooms are minimalist with a twist: you might pass right by the hidden bathroom door on your first visit but, once inside, you'll find luxe amenities and spa-style baths. Local stylists, artists, and professionals take appointments in the lobby or meet for cocktails and Asian bites in the buzzy Taiko Cuisine & Bar.

Pros

  • Luxurious spa
  • Great location only yards away from the big three museums
  • One of the best design hotels in town

Cons

  • Breakfast service can be slow
  • Duplex rooms (bed upstairs, shower downstairs) not to every guest's liking
  • Very expensive rates

Jan Luyken Amsterdam

$$$ | Jan Luykenstraat 58, 1071 CS, Netherlands Fodor's Choice

This stylish trio of quaint 19th-century town houses offers a peaceful sanctuary with friendly service and a warm design with quirky touches and hints of Art Nouveau that successfully creates that "home away from home" feel. Enjoy it in the private garden or the lovely library, which is equipped with velvety apricot armchairs, a bookcase brimming with travel literature, magazines and artsy coffee table books focused on the nearby museums. Rooms have large, comfy beds and black-and-white bathrooms with CODAGE amenities (and tiny tubs). There is also a garden-facing gym equipped with premium NOHrD handmade wooden fitness equipment and cork walls. The Museumplein and fashionable shopping streets are just steps away, as is the Concertgebouw, if you fancy hearing some classical music in a suitably grand setting. There are also free bikes if you fancy exploring a bit further away.

Catalonia Vondel Amsterdam

Many things about this charming boutique hotel, close to the Vondelpark, instill calm, from the comfy, light-filled lounges and the lovely garden to the soothing guest rooms, which feature works of modern art mixed with more traditional touches like ornamental ceilings. The restaurant, Joost, has a light and airy look and serves seasonal Dutch specialties.

Hotel JL no. 76

$$$ | Jan Luykenstraat 76, 1071 CT, Netherlands

These two 18th-century buildings on leafy Jan Luykenstraat (yes, that’s where the name comes from!) may look traditional, but in the lounges and guest rooms everything is stylishly contemporary, with Dutch art on the walls, colorful wallpaper, and natural fabrics. Hotel Museumzicht

$ | Jan Luykenstraat 22, 1071 CN, Netherlands

At this budget hotel most guest rooms have shared bathrooms, but etchings hang on the walls, much of the furniture is antique, and the Rijksmuseum looms just outside the windows. Functionally furnished with vintage pieces (not in a hip way, mind you), the small rooms look dated, but they come equipped with modern box-spring beds and free Wi-Fi. A free continental breakfast is served in the cozy breakfast room/lounge, which is filled with Delft blue tiles, antique collectables, and vintage board games. Note, though, that the hotel occupies the top floors of the building, and guests must climb a narrow and very steep stairway to the reception desk and the rooms—the owner highly recommends traveling light. During busy periods, there's a two-day minimum length of stay.

Pros

  • Quirky decoration with Dutch flavor and personal touches
  • Good value for short culture trips
  • Many nearby attractions

Cons

  • Steep staircase
  • Shared bathrooms are cramped
  • No bar, but there is coffee and tea in the library
