The Best Hotel in Western Islands, Amsterdam

Background Illustration for Hotels

A short walk west of Centraal Station along the IJ River brings you to Westerdok, former docklands that now house brand-new buildings containing offices, places to eat, and a hotel. Unlike the more historic sections of Amsterdam, this area has a modern, open feel, with few amenities but peaceful water vistas across to the stunning EYE Film Institute.

$$$ | IJDock 6, 1013 MM, Netherlands

Perched on the IJ River in Westerdok, this large, striking edition in the Spanish hotel chain has well-designed and spacious (if a tad generic) rooms, friendly service, and an international feel. Each of the 12 floors contains rooms with a different color scheme, mod chairs and desks, and basic but sparkling white bathrooms; some rooms have views across the river. Contemporary art, including a bronze ceiling-high sculpture, fills the soaring lobby. The basement gym is small but well equipped.

Pros

  • Interesting architecture
  • Quiet waterfront location
  • Cheerful staff eager to provide assistance

Cons

  • Little Dutch flavor
  • Somewhat impersonal feel
  • Not many amenities (restaurants, stores) in the vicinity
