Dom Gonçalo Hotel & Spa

$ | Rua Jacinta Marto 100, Fátima, 2495–450, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Located a 10-minute walk from the sanctuary, this family-owned boutique hotel has a bucolic feel thanks to a charming garden overlooked by some guest rooms, and which provides some ingredients for the excellent O Convite restaurant. In striking contrast to the austere style of many hotels in Fátima, this lodging boasts modern design, little luxuries such as a pillow menu, Castelbel amenities and espresso machines, and an outstanding breakfast buffet. Rates includes one hour a day of access to the spa. The O Convite restaurant (€26, closed Sun. dinner and Mon.)—a favorite with local gourmets—serves traditional Portuguese cuisine, made with fresh ingredients, with the change to try wines by the glass.

  • Parents appreciate the playroom and playground
  • Free transfer to shrine

Luz Charming Houses

$$ | Rua Principal 78, Fátima, 2495–650, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Nestled in a nature reserve on the outskirts of Fátima, this stylish resort-style lodging has cottages inspired by local architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries—though their solar panels and open-plan interiors are completely up-to-date. The breakfast buffet is varied, and you can also order ahead for dinner (a lighter version of regional cuisine) or just snack on tasty local cheeses and hams. Spa treatments are offered in a grotto, and there's a magnesium pool with a pretty kiosk that serves cocktails and snacks in summer.

Pros

  • Laid-back vibe, with mini-spa, yoga and pottery classes
  • Tank-style outdoor pool open May through October

Cons

  • A little far from the city's main attractions
  • Open-plan guest lodgings not to everyone's taste
