Set among the pine trees near Mexilhoeira Beach, this small and stylish eco-conscious hotel, 20 minutes from Torres Vedras, was built with a desire to harmoniously integrate it with its surroundings: all but one of the open-plan rooms have views of the dunes from a large private terrace (and the odd one out makes up for the lack of a view with a walled garden). Decorated with natural driftwood, all accommodations have underfloor heating for winter, while in summer a fan and the sea breeze are enough to keep you cool. The restaurant serves creations using organic fare from the hotel's own garden, which is also the source of aromatics for the bar. There is also a glamping tent and, on a neighboring plot, a couple dozen equally stylish villas sleeping up to six adults, each with a terrace, barbecue, and private pool.

The idyllic location—on a rise with absolutely breathtaking views of the ocean, the nearby cliffs and beach, and a lush green valley—is by far the best thing about this hotel near the town of Lourinhã, 16 km (10 miles) northwest of Torres Vedras. The building itself is plain but makes up for it with its position (rooms with a sea view cost extra) and a wide variety of facilities, such as large indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, and a spa with sauna, steam room and a range of treatments, starting from €25. Despite the name, there is no longer a full-size golf course here, but down the hill behind the hotel are a riding center and a kids club, with everything from trampolines and inflatable slides to traditional games and a miniature golf course, with prices by the hour or the day.

This bright, cheerfully appointed hotel—part of a small national chain—sits on a pretty downtown plaza. Spacious rooms, some of which have a bath and others a shower, have all the amenities you'll need, and several have large balconies with beautiful views of the castle. The first-floor snack-bar is open 24 hours and serves salads and a few local favorites until late.
