Altis Belém Hotel & Spa

$$$$ | Doca do Bom Sucesso, Lisbon, 1400-038, Portugal Fodor's Choice

The hotel has one of Lisbon's best spas, and there's fine dining on site at Michelin-starred Feitoria restaurant.

Palácio do Governador

$$$$ | Rua Bartolomeu Dias 117, Lisbon, 1400-030, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Layers of history are on display at this beautiful retreat that combines fascinating peeks into the past with modern amenities. The spacious and tastefully appointed rooms are housed in a building once owned by the Governor of Torre de Belém (and on the site of some Roman ruins, which can be seen through glass panels in the floor). The lobby was once a chapel, and the excellent restaurant has an original domed ceiling. A luxurious spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and pleasant terrace bar make the hotel a wonderful place to relax.

Pros

  • Vast indoor pool and spa
  • Garden terrace great for drinks
  • Good Portuguese-Asian restaurant on site

Cons

  • Hard to find
  • Less-than-scenic neighborhood
  • Extra charge for breakfast

Madonna based herself at this restored 19th-century palace while house hunting in Lisbon, and it's not hard to see why she fell in love with the place—the former home of the Marquis of Valle Flôr and its gardens are national monuments, and the elegant property harbors a collection of fine art.
