Cais do Sodre and Santos
Taking its name from a once-busy river quay, the Cais do Sodré neighborhood remains a transportation hub. Trains for Cascais and the Estoril Coast depart from the local rail station of the same name, and ferries for Cacilhas—from where a bus will take you to the Cristo Rei statue—leave from the boat station behind it. There are other comings and goings, too: one of Lisbon's most famous market halls (the Mercado da Ribeira) is across the street, and one half has been transformed into a trendy collection of gourmet food stands, bars, and shopping. The once seedy red-light district has in recent years been transformed into one of Lisbon's hippest areas for barhopping.
