FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

If you count wine among your passions, a stay at the British-inspired Yeatman Hotel should be on your itinerary. The brainchild of Adrian Bridge, head of leading Port producer Taylor Fladgate, the hotel has fine wine as a recurrent theme, from the decanter-shaped outdoor infinity pool to the individually designed rooms, each created in partnership with a different Portuguese winery. The on-site cellar, curated by wine director Beatriz Machado, holds one of the most extensive wine collections in Portugal, with more than 20,000 bottles. There’s relaxed dining at the Orangerie, while the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant showcases the skills of one of Portugal’s most acclaimed chefs. The Yeatman also paved the way for the regeneration of this previously neglected part of town, now home to the World of Wine cultural district.

Pros

  • Excellent location for visiting wine cellars and World of Wine
  • Sweeping views
  • Excellent service and fine dining on site

Cons

  • Location on a rather steep hill means a lot of walking
  • Neoclassical decor can seem ostentatious
  • Prices are not cheap

The Rebello

$$$$ | Cais de Gaia 380, Vila Nova de Gaia, 4400-245, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Housed in converted 19th-century port wine warehouses, The Rebello stands on Gaia's riverbank and offers incredible views over the river and across to Porto. The 103 industrial-chic lodgings range from studios to three-bedroom penthouses, complete with kitchenettes and bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers, artisanal Portuguese Claus Porto amenities. The rooftop bar buzzes at sunset, while downstairs the Roman bath-inspired spa soothes weary travelers. Just outside, a wooden boardwalk stretches along the Douro, perfect for early morning runs or evening strolls without the tourist crush Kids disappear happily to the "Little Rebels" club, leaving parents free to explore nearby wine cellars or enjoy Portuguese small plates at Pot&Pan restaurant, where local ingredients take center stage in a space that celebrates its past as a cookware factory.

Pros

  • Beautiful views from balconies and rooftop
  • Chic design in rooms and common areas
  • Excellent kids' club and spa

Cons

  • Quite far from many sights
  • Rooftop gets busy with non-guests
  • Not a budget option
