Bela's Bed & Breakfast

$$ | San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico Fodor's Choice
San Cristóbal’s most charming B&B, just a half-block from the Santo Domingo church, is a quiet oasis in the middle of the city with its five bedrooms and a dining room all congregating around a quiet garden with stone walkways and pretty plantings. You'll find a gracious owner and her rescue dogs, and rooms ranging in size from two smaller spaces with a shared bath to a large suite with its own sitting room and balcony. There’s no sign in front, but taxi drivers know the place—it’s the blue and white building on the street. Advance reservations are essential.

Pros

  • Helpful, attentive owner
  • Quiet seclusion in the middle of the city
  • Ample breakfasts

Cons

  • Four friendly dogs on-site, but not a place to go if you’re not a canine lover

Casa de los Arcángeles

$$ | Calle Cuauhtémoc 4, San Cristóbal de las Casas, 29200, Mexico

Its architecture may nod to traditional but this small hotel feels every bit as modern as it is. Seven suites surround the open-air restaurant in the hotel's courtyard, which is candlelit by night. Rooms have shiny hardwood floors and bright colors.

Pros

  • Not having to deal with the problems that can be found in older historic hotels (like shoddy plumbing)

Cons

  • Lacks a bit of San Cristóbal's colonial vibe

Holiday Inn San Cristóbal Español

$$ | Calle 1 de Marzo 15, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico
A U.S. hotel chain may not leap to mind when looking for a place to stay in such a historic locale, but this Holiday Inn in an 18th-century hacienda that has served as a hotel for over a century has captured that San Cristóbal feel and combined it with reliable chain amenities. A mix of large and small rooms line rambling hallways and staircases (it’s a bit easy to get lost finding your way back to your room) while a central courtyard adds to the Colonial charm. Ask to see a couple of rooms since they are markedly different in layout although not so different in price.

Pros

  • Chain amenities without sameness of a chain hotel
  • Friendly, attentive staff

Cons

  • A few bathrooms could use new tiles
  • A few rooms have no windows

Hotel Casa Mexicana

$$ | Calle 28 de Agosto 1, San Cristóbal de las Casas, 29200, Mexico

A pond filled with flowers is one of the many touches that make this hostelry in a restored colonial mansion stand out. Glass ceilings in the lobby and atrium make for beautiful lighting. A lovely newer wing across the street, also in a colonial home, has a colonnaded courtyard and large, quiet rooms painted light colors and filled with tasteful photographs of San Cristóbal. The restaurant, which surrounds a courtyard with banana trees, serves international dishes.

Pros

  • Pond and glass ceilings are extremely cool

Cons

  • Lots of groups stay here and can be better accommodated than individual guests

Hotel Casavieja

$$ | Calle María Adelina Flores 27, San Cristóbal de las Casas, 29230, Mexico

Dating from 1740, this colonial-era house has been declared a historical monument. Graceful colonnades separate three interior courtyards. Most of the simple guest rooms have large windows overlooking the courtyard or corridors; a few rooms on the second floor have views of the mountains. The restaurant, Doña Rita, sits among the elegant columns on one of the porches. The hotel is three blocks east of the zócalo.

Pros

  • Fantastically historic
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • A few reports of inconsistent service

Plaza Gallery Hotel & Boutique

$$ | Calle Guadalupe Victoria 2, San Cristóbal de las Casas, 29200, Mexico
Historic on the outside—that’s all that’s allowed in the center of town—but surprisingly modern inside, this lodging just off the cathedral plaza manages to pull off its un–San Cristóbal style. Warm earth tones and polished contemporary furniture, art, and lighting populate the rooms of this 1940s neoclassical building that once housed several stores. All rooms have a small terrace or balcony and views of the main plaza; ask for a room on the second floor to avoid street noise. An on-site restaurant and spa rounds out offerings. The "Plaza Gallery" sign on the corner of the building is easy to miss; look instead for the elongated, stylized P and G in front.

Pros

  • You cannot get more centrally located
  • Wonderful rates for the offerings
  • Attentive staff

Cons

  • Modern surroundings may seem out of place in San Cristóbal
