The Malcolm Hotel

$$$ | 321 Spring Creek Dr., Canmore, AB, T1W 2G2, Canada Fodor's Choice

Taking its name from a town on Scotland's northwest shores that was itself named after Scottish King Malcom III (1058–93), this luxury hotel blends modernity with touches of bygone royal decadence: the lobby has a massive stone fireplace and a large portrait of his majesty, but guest rooms are more contemporary, done in neutral tones and equipped with flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, and bathrooms that have walk-in showers. Most rooms have mountain views; some also have balconies and/or are pet-friendly. The extensive list of amenities includes a restaurant; a lounge; a coffee bar; a year-round, heated, outdoor swimming pool; two hot tubs; outdoor firepits; a fitness center; and a games lounge with pool tables, foosball, and board games. This is also the only hotel in Canmore with a full-service concierge on-site. Underground parking is included in the room price.

Pros

  • New, modern hotel
  • Five-minute walk to downtown Canmore
  • Many resort-style amenities

Cons

  • Outdoor pool is heated but the walk to it is chilly in winter
  • Underground parking is limited, and the alternate lot is outdoors
  • Some rooms are smaller than others

Many of the large rooms at this lodge have fireplaces, hot tubs, and sitting areas, and although its location is second to none—close to area trails, ski resorts, and golf courses—it's almost a destination unto itself thanks to a large indoor pool and water park, hot tubs, tennis courts, a eucalyptus-infused steam room, a large fitness area, and a spa. Several on-site restaurants serve everything from pizza to haute cuisine, and the Summit Spa offers treatments for both men and women. In summer, you can rent bicycles in Kananaskis Village and enjoy miles of excellent trails, or enjoy a round of golf at the nearby Kananaskis Country Golf Course. The nearby Nakiska ski resort is popular with winter guests, and there are cross-country ski trails near the resort and equipment rentals in the village. There are children's activities during peak seasons. The large Kananaskis Nordic Spa is also located beside this resort.
