Albergo Allegria

$ | 43 Rte. 296, Windham, NY, 12496, USA

Antiques are scattered throughout this handsome 1892 Queen Anne Victorian, which has stained-glass windows and other original features. You can warm up by the fireplace in the parlor—which is slightly formal but inviting—or help yourself to a snack in the kitchen. The guest rooms have down comforters and furnishings that evoke a time gone by without exaggeration. The master suite—with its king-size bed and feather bed, double whirlpool tub, and gas fireplace—is billed as honeymoon central. Behind the inn is a carriage house (formerly a horse stable) with five suites with cathedral ceilings, skylights, double whirlpool tubs, gas fireplaces, and garden views. The inn also has two sister properties—the Mountain Streams Cottage, with two suites and one room, and the Farmhouse, with three apartments—in Windham. A bountiful breakfast is included.

Pros

  • Beautiful main house
  • Noteworthy swimming hole
  • Big breakfast

Beds on Clouds

$ | 5320 Rte. 23, Windham, NY, 12496, USA
This lovingly restored Victorian mansion dates from 1854 and retains many graceful architectural touches, as well as a decor that is either completely charming or a bit kooky, depending on how you feel about ceilings featuring handpainted clouds. Rooms are fit for a fairytale, with sumptuous bed linens and pretty color schemes of pink, lavender, and even rainbow. The abundant gourmet breakfast (vegan and vegetarian friendly) includes savory omelets and piles of perfectly cooked buttermilk pancakes. The location, less than half a mile from Windham Mountain and close to many bars and restaurants, is hard to beat.

Pros

  • Memorable rooms
  • Great location
  • Tasty breakfast

Cons

  • Decor is too much for some
  • Some rooms are a bit small

Country Suite Bed and Breakfast

$ | 11365 Rte. 23, Windham, NY, 12496, USA
This stately farmhouse, with its mountain views and mix of family antiques and carefully chosen newer pieces, is one of the most charming places to stay in the Windham area. We like the Loganberry Suite, which has a sleigh bed and a little sitting area with wingback chairs. The splurge here—well worth it, by the way—is the Loft, with its peaked ceilings, separate sleeping areas, and windows letting in lots of light. It can fit a family, but is also just right for a couple looking for some privacy.

Pros

  • Lovely period decor
  • Intimate feel
  • Nice views

Cons

  • Short drive to center of town

Glass Mountain Inn

$ | 108-110 Rte. 214, Phoenicia, NY, 12464, USA
After opening several hip spots in Brooklyn, Jeff and Brooke Bailey decided to head to the Catskills to open an inn for creative types like them with uniquely curated decor that includes original artworks, hand-sewn quilts, poetry books, and a retro collection of vinyl. The result is the Glass Mountain Inn, where the couple resides on-site with their young children. They're friendly folks, happy to pick you up at the local bus station or arrange for some vegetarian food to be delivered to your room. You can play volleyball or croquet on the tree-shaded lawn, or borrow one of the bikes for a morning spin. Esopus Creek is just across Route 241. There are two rustic suites: a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom with an old-timey vibe and plenty of country charm. If you want more privacy, there's a two-bedroom cottage with a private deck and an upright piano.

Pros

  • Warm and welcoming vibe
  • Good for families
  • Charming decor

Cons

  • Right on main road

If you're into Victoriana, you'll love this restored 1875 house and all its architectural flourishes and antique furnishings in the heart of Phoenicia. All four rooms are individually decorated and two share a bathroom. Our favorite is Ardrey's Suite, which has its own sitting room with handsome wingback chairs; Violet's Suite has its own 1930s-style kitchen. Enjoy an organic breakfast on the front porch, or take a stroll to Sweet Sue's or one of the other stellar places for morning meals.
