2 Best Hotels in Big Bend National Park, Texas

Background Illustration for Hotels

At the Chisos Mountains Lodge, the only hotel in the park, you can select from a freestanding stone cottage or a motel-style room, both within a pace or two of spectacular views—Chisos sunsets are not to be missed. It's convenient to stay here because it's close to trails, and there is a gift shop, general store, visitor center, and the park's only restaurant. Even if you don't stay here, go just to see the stunning view through the wall-sized dining-room windows. The region flanking Big Bend retains its grand historic hotels, such as the glamorous Hotel Paisano in Marfa, the historic Gage Hotel in Marathon, the simple but charming Hotel Limpia in Fort Davis, and the stately Old West Holland Hotel in Alpine, but it also boasts the Lajitas Golf Resort and moderately priced motels in Terlingua.

Chisos Mountains Lodge

$$ | End of Chisos Basin Rd., Big Bend National Park, TX, 79834, USA Fodor's Choice

With ranger talks just next door at the visitor center, miles of hiking trails to suit all levels of fitness, and plenty of wildlife nearby, this comfortable lodging is a great place for families, though as of this writing is closed likely through mid-2027 while undergoing a major renovation. The majority of rooms are motel-style (some with balconies and fantastic views), but for a romantic getaway, reserve one of the five Roosevelt Stone Cottages built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Book far in advance during the October-to-May busy season—up to a year's lead time is not out of the question for spring break and holidays.

Hotel El Capitan

$$ | 100 E. Broadway, Van Horn, TX, 79855, USA

Famed architect Henry Trost designed this Spanish Revival hotel, which takes its place among such other glamorous Trost landmarks as the Hotel Paisano (Marfa), the Holland Hotel (Alpine), and the Gage Hotel (Marathon) and is just an hour south of Pine Springs Visitor Center via a picturesque desert drive on Highway 54. Typical of Trost buildings, it features a grand lobby, European tiles, exposed Spanish vigas, room balconies, and wrought-iron bannisters. With the downstairs Gopher Hole Bar and El Capitan Dining Room, this is the jewel of Van Horn. It's also a good option en route if you're headed to Big Bend, which is 200 miles farther south.

Pros

  • Lovely, historic architecture
  • Some rooms have courtyard patios
  • Atmopsheric restaurant

Cons

  • Not much to see and do in immediate vicinity
  • Some highway noise
  • Some rooms are quite small
