The Weston

$$$ | 630 Main St., Weston, VT, 05161, USA Fodor's Choice

For one of the few true luxury lodging experiences in Vermont, head to this stunning boutique hotel in a white clapboard building just down the road from Weston’s town center. Each of the exquisitely designed guest rooms is unique, but all come with lush fabrics, hand-carved four-poster beds, and antique furniture. The entire property has a distinct Old World style that highlights its history but never feels fussy or old-fashioned. Bathrooms are bright, spacious, and modern, with walk-in showers and luxury toiletries. Several rooms have separate clawfoot tubs, private outdoor patio areas, and working gas Franklin stoves or fireplaces. The on-site restaurant, the Left Bank, is another gem, with a delightful menu of French bistro favorites that puts an emphasis on all things local; it also has one of the more impressive wine lists in the state. Rounding out the on-site perks is a holistic wellness center that includes a spa, gym, and yoga studio.

Pros

  • Unparalleled bucolic retreat in a charming town
  • Individually designed rooms all with a keen artistic eye to detail
  • Excellent on-site restaurant

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Not all rooms have fireplaces or bathtubs
  • Rooms are in two nearby buildings that are not connected, which means some walking outside might be necessary

Built in 1937, this fully renovated roadside motel has been given a distinct artsy, boutique upgrade by a foursome of new owners, three of whom are working artists, which translates into a sculpture garden out front, regular workshops by a resident artist, and performances on the red stage on the vast, hammock-dappled back lawn. Taconic Hotel

$$$ | 3835 Main St., Manchester, VT, 05254, USA

Vermont's only Kimpton, which opened in 2015, attempts to walk the fine line between its corporate boutique design and a Vermont flavor—the latter of which is distilled, quite literally, in the Copper Grouse, the hotel's on-site enclave of seasonal plates and craft cocktails. In many aspects, it succeeds in highlighting Vermont's inherent character, with a wraparound porch, wood floors, vintage photography and prints, sleek, contemporary guest rooms decorated in subdued light browns and greens, and gas fireplaces that keep the mood bright and upbeat.

Pros

  • Yoga mats in every room
  • No additional fee for pets
  • The house restaurant, the Copper Grouse, does a good turn on American bistro cuisine, cocktails included

Cons

  • Not very Vermonty experience
  • Only chain's rewards members get free high-speed Internet/Wi-Fi
  • Tiny pool
