2 Best Hotels in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Background Illustration for Hotels

Park lodgings range from two magnificent old hotels to simple cabins to bland modern motels. Make reservations at least two months ahead for July and August for all lodgings. Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel are the only accommodations open in winter; rates are the same as in summer. Ask about the size of beds, bathrooms, thickness of walls, and room location when you book, especially in the older hotels, where accommodations vary and upgrades are ongoing. Telephones have been put in most rooms, but there are no TVs. There are no roll-away beds available.

Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins

$$$$ | 235 Yellowstone Lake Rd., Yellowstone National Park, WY, 82190, USA Fodor's Choice

Dating from 1891, the park's oldest lodge maintains an air of old-world refinement; just off the lobby, the spacious sunroom offers priceless views of Yellowstone Lake at sunrise or sunset. It's also a great place to play cards, read, or just soak in its considerable grandeur. Note the tiled fireplace, the etched windows of the gift shop, and the beautiful bay windows. The white wicker furnishings in the rooms lend them a light, airy feel; some rooms have water views. The least expensive rooms are in an annex.

Pros

  • Relaxing atmosphere
  • The best views of any park lodging
  • Charming old-world vibe

Cons

  • Top rooms can be quite expensive
  • Wired Internet, but no Wi-Fi

Old Faithful Snow Lodge

$$$$ | 2051 Snow Lodge Ave., Yellowstone National Park, WY, 82190, USA

This large, contemporary lodge brings back the grand tradition of park lodges by making good use of heavy timber beams and wrought-iron accents in its distinctive facade; guest rooms combine traditional style with up-to-date amenities. In the interior common spaces you'll find soaring ceilings, natural lighting, and a spacious lobby with a stone fireplace, and a long sitting room where writing desks and overstuffed chairs invite you to linger. This is one of only two park lodging facilities open in winter, when the only way to get here is on over-snow vehicles.

Pros

  • The park's most modern hotel
  • Inviting common spaces
  • Open in both summer and winter

Cons

  • Pricey, but you're paying for location
  • Rooms don't have a ton of character
  • Busy part of the park
